Des Moines Secretary of State Earl G. Miller announced he is through with politics after his June 1 primary loss in the Republican governor race. Miller has leased the Hotel Stratford at 709 Mulberry Street and bought its furniture, planning to focus on private business starting July 1.
Des Moines reports heavy downpours drenched sections of Iowa Thursday. Davenport tallied 2.45 inches as the Mississippi River rises steadily. Iowa City recorded .80 inch with the Iowa River approaching flood stage.
Grinnell College hosts Hawkeye Boys State where candidates Robert S. Fontana of Cedar Rapids and Robert E. Williams of Dayton were nominated for governor. Campaign posters appear campus wide as the six day citizenship institute, sponsored by the American Legion, begins.
Fire destroyed the Farmers Elevator in Wapello causing two injuries. Manager Myron Daily said the $25,000 loss is insured and the structure will be rebuilt. Fred Bielke suffered a fractured wrist and was taken to a Muscatine hospital. Dean Hank also from Wapello was hurt but less seriously.
At the Iowa state 4-H convention a panel discussion included participants from Venezuela Des Moines and Ogden as girls discussed war aims. Arleen Kluss of Luzerne was elected president Lois Frederick of Marion became vice president Elizabeth Clause of Grand Junction was named secretarymeasurer and Katherine Gustafson of Royal was chosen historian.
Des Moines Iowa. The war and a rubber shortage have sharply reduced farm to market road work and threaten the payment of primary highway bonds. Fred White chief engineer Iowa state highway commission said highway use dropped over 20 percent.
Leigh W. Soule, longtime Washington Y M C A general secretary, resigns to become executive secretary of Montgomery County Y M C A in Dayton Ohio. He will start August 15 and was also offered a USO post at Wright Patterson. In Washington he guided growth and financial stability, expanding boys club work and Hi Y, with the pool and building improvements noted. Soule's departure ends a era of extensive community service and leadership.
Secretary Leigh Soule of the Washington Y M C A resigns effective August 15 to accept work in Dayton Ohio with the Chamber of Commerce and church programs. At a board meeting, the Y M C A directors appointed committees for the new year led by President John Winga with names listed for Physical Religious Boys Finance and related duties.
Major General Clarence L. Tinker commander of the Hawaiian air force is missing in action after an attack on the Japanese fleet off Midway on June 7. His plane was last seen descending toward the sea and searches failed to locate any trace in the area.
President Roosevelt announced a 15 day nationwide scrap rubber collection starting 12:01 am Monday June 15. About 400 000 filling stations will act as collection depots paying 1 cent per pound. The move aims to gauge stockpiles to decide if nationwide gasoline rationing is needed to conserve tires.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse today for David Gomer Griffith of Columbus Junction and Florence Victoria Canott of Ainsworth.
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church at 302 East Second street will host a free Bible school starting Monday June 15 at 8 am under Rev. E L Stuempfig. Sessions run four days a week through June 15 26 with activities in Bible lessons crafts hymn studies and dramatizations for kindergarten through grade school children.
A group of three Washington county women farm leaders will host a radio program from WSUI Iowa City Saturday afternoon at 12 46 under AAA auspices. The participants are Mrs. Carrie Quinn Mrs Elmer Thomas and Mrs Norma Clegg all from Ainsworth. The program aims to interest farm women.
Brattleboro Vermont June 12 Lloyd Duensing Washington received a certificate of merit for satisfactory Holstein calf club work and junior membership in the Holstein Friesian Association of America. Recommending by state 4 H club leader grants all privileges except voting until age 21. He is the 6368th national recipient since August 11, 1924.
John Von Arb appeared before Justice of the Peace W S Eldridge charged with assault and battery by his wife. He pleaded guilty and was fined ten dollars plus costs.
