Iowa State Government in Fine Financial Shape in Defense Crisis

Iowa records show Comptroller Porter’s office that state finances are solid enough to weather defense shocks for a year without a tax increase. About 10 million dollars in circulating capital is on hand, with 3 million unencumbered in reserve as a crisis fund and earmarked sums for a new office building and library start at the University of Iowa. If one mill fails to raise the past levy, the crisis fund would cover the shortfall, following likely adjustments to indirect and direct tax collections under the new 60 percent valuation law.
