The Evening Journal invites readers to join the Three Quarter Century club honoring pioneers. The first annual dinner for 150 members will be held Thursday June 25. Applications are available at the Journal office with no membership charge.
Mason City reports the Iowa State Code Authority announces northern districts begin registering for hire trucks on Monday with southern districts starting Tuesday. The nationwide deadline to register by June 13 is stated, with early response already strong in states under regulation. Eslick notes guidance from the National Code Authority and growing owner compliance.
Rev Charles Mannahardt, formerly a Washington youth, was ordained and named temporary assistant pastor at St Joseph's Church Ft Madison township. Announcement came from Dr F W Eastwood Presbyterian pastor who arranged the meeting Tuesday evening at 7:00.
In Washington June 11 senators clashed with Rexford Tugwell during his confirmation hearing for under secretary of agriculture. Tugwell denied plots to overthrow the constitution as he defended his fitness. The post would raise his salary by 1800 dollars and may include an automobile.
More than fifteen hundred people attended the Pacific Whaling Co exhibit at Rock Island depot yesterday. An educational display featured a giant whale along with octopus sea creature penguins and other curiosities explained by twenty or more guides.
County Agent W J Rouda received a message from RK Bliss Ames Iowa State College extension director stating that all restrictions on planting dates for fodder corn and grain sorghums on non contracted acres in farms under wheat corn hog or tobacco contracts were removed today by the adjustment administration for all states. The notice was corrected from contracted to non contracted acres in a Washington to Ames chain.

The 4-H girls county rally will be held June 14 at Washington high school with registration 9:30 to 10. Prizes total for music memory and well groomed girl contests. County officers installation, reports, and several stunts follow, concluding with a picnic lunch.
Washington High School's newspaper was rated excellent in the Iowa High School Press Association contest. Results announced by Emery H. Ruby of Drake University show several papers earning excellent ratings while others received superior or good.
Chairman Carl W. Klein announced 1000 bushels of soybeans for seed will arrive in Washington this week for distribution to farmers in need after drought damage. The state emergency relief committee sent the beans, with a limit of 15 bushels per farmer, enough to plant ten acres. Entitled applicants should apply at the county corn hog committee office.
The world arms conference adjourned without any agreement to curb a general arms race. A securities and disarmament commission was not expected to yield results. Italy and Hungary will observe, Britain will aid the commission but not sign new mutual aid or non aggression pacts.
Prof A D Worthington and assistant state entomologist will join county agent Ronda bush at the Wm Darbyshire farm east of Washington for a chinch bug barrier demonstration. They will share the latest findings on destroying the pest threatening crops and plan multiple sessions to cover township areas.
Des Moines reports a return to normal June weather after months of extreme heat. Temperatures cooled to around 59 degrees in Washington yesterday, with forecasts for continued cool conditions and light scattered showers. Light rain fell in eastern and southern Iowa, while heavy rainfall in Canada and Nebraska suggested more precipitation for car belt states tonight or tomorrow.

Deputy Sheriff H M Putnam brought Dewey Coffman to the county jail from Sandwich after his indictment at the January district court term for desertion of wife and children. Judge J G Patterson holds court today and Coffman may be arraigned this session by County Attorney George F Morrison.
An American Airlines transport vanished with seven aboard on a Newark to Chicago flight Saturday. It was found in the Catskill mountains destroyed by fire with all occupants dead. The crew included pilots Clyde Holbrook and John Barron and stewardess Margaret Huckaby.
Preé Herr died at 11 30 this morning at his Wellman home. He was 80 and a retired farmer who had been seriously ill for about a week. The couple recently celebrated their forty ninth wedding anniversary.
Funeral services for Mrs. Frank White will be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Sherman's funeral home. Dr F C Witzigman will be in charge. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery.
