Nearly 1,000 Masons from over 425 A. F. & A. M. lodges in Iowa gathered in Des Moines for the annual grand lodge meeting with officer elections slated for this afternoon as the key business.
Ames Iowa June 11 More than 1 600 members of Town girls 4 H clubs gathered for their annual state convention. The meeting opened yesterday with addresses by Carrie Chapman Catt President R M Hughes of Town State college and Dr D J Glomset of Des Moines. Contests and practice for musical entertainments to be given Thursday and Friday occupied the day.
Chicago marks a major population gain with 672,048 new residents boosting the total to 3 million. The final census figures were announced at a gala luncheon of the Association of Commerce, as ticker tape and flags celebrated city growth with a five minute wristie salute.
Washington M C A to sponsor a Marengo visit for about forty boys on Monday. The annual Town goodwill tour promotes aviation with an accompanying show. Cost is one dollar per boy, covering admission and transport. Eligible boys ten years or older may join, with a stop at Town City and use of the university field house pool.
Miami Florida June 11 Three affiliated banks near here closed their doors after Bank of Bay Biscayne failed to open. Coral Gables Bank and Miami Beach Bank & Trust also shut, with Bay Biscayne holding about 11 million in deposits and 1 million in capital. State authorities cited harm and “talk and the state” as cited reasons.
Downtown Washington shows heavy digging and fresh dirt as excavations continue for the new Masonic temple foundation the Journal building basement and new water mains on North Marion. City crews under Supt. P L Jordan and Street Commissioner G W Wallace trench the park terrace for hydrants and an eight inch sewer to serve the new structures and post office vicinity.

Washington June 11 Bishop James Cannon Jr testified before the senate lobby committee voluntarily but refused to answer certain questions about his role in the 1928 presidential campaign. The Methodist bishop, noted for his previous walkout, said no design had been reached on the committee’s authority to question him on political matters in the Pearl Bacon company inquiry.
Washington June 11 United Press polls show 47 senators for and 47 against the Smoot Hawley tariff with Reed and Grundy undecided. Mellon conferred with Reed and Grundy as leaders plan to push passage Friday. Congress has chased the measure for sixteen months and the final Senate vote is set for Friday at 2 p.m.
Chicago police received the surrender of Lam unt, a Capone associate, via his attorney Hunt. Two secret witnesses reportedly resemble the lone gunman who killed Chicago Tribune reporter Albert Lingle in a pedestrian subway. Hunt denied involvement and called the slaying a police and press crisis in a city already strained by crime.
The Washington county board of supervisors met as a board of equalization to review personal property assessments and found them well equalized with no changes. The county board will report to the state board of assessment and review in Des Moines, which meets the second Monday in July to consider adjustments. After the hearing, assessments will go to the county tax list for collection. Burlington meeting today includes highway matters discussion with Bert Myer and Harold Ofelt among speakers.
A ten cent social is planned by the men's Bichie class of the Pleasant Hill Christian church this Thursday evening. Pierce Knox will perform drum numbers with Mrs Masson and daughters providing accompaniment. Des Moines reports a wide mix of corn stages from just planted to stalks a foot high as weather causes uneven progress. Some areas saw replanting due to excess rain, others drought, pests, or wireworms. Last week’s showers aided crusted fields, but wet ground kept work from weeds. Small grain crops including winter wheat, oats, and barley were in good condition. Rain delayed early hay cuttings in some spots but benefited gardens.
Mrs. D. W. Harvey of Washington is in Eldora recovering from a Sunday accident that left her with a broken collar bone. A party including Elvin J. Ryan and Charles Ryan was traveling when a rod broke sending the car toward a ditch, overturning twice. Mrs. Harvey was treated at Eldora hospital and is expected to heal quickly.

A Drake University graduate, known as Cam, he previously worked in McMurray Hill and Co. Des Moines. Mrs A W Henke returns to Greenspring Ohio after the sudden death of sister Mrs Jace Barrington.
A coastwise passenger steamer Fairfax and Shell Eastern Petroleum tanker Pinthis collided in dense fog off Scituate Massachusetts. The tanker sank after fire spread, with 12,000 barrels of fuel aboard. Survivors report 30 plus dead. 71 passengers aboard Fairfax with 11 missing. Fairfax limped into Boston under own power after the crash.
