Washington County Democrats field five nominees in primary

Washington County lawmakers and party officials announced at least five Democratic candidates will appear on the primary ballot. Leona Peiffer seeks county recorder, Erma Zelinsky for county treasurer, Lloyd Griggs for the board of supervisors, with James Quinn aiming for re election as state representative and F. W. Schnoebelen running for state senator.

Cuban ship barred from San Juan harbor today

The U S Coast Guard denied entry to the Cuban cargo vessel Cerro Pelado off San Juan Puerto Rico. It was believed to carry Cuban athletes to the 10th Central American and Caribbean games. Entry was refused on Treasury Department policy under the port security program after interagency consultation.

Hughes Says Johnson Agriculture Policy Hurts Dems in Iowa

Governor Harold Hughes warned that statements from Johnson administration agriculture officials may damage Democrat prospects in Iowa’s fall elections. He cited a Pentagon pork purchase cut and a Freeman remark on lower food prices as factors hurting farmer support and the party’s standing in a state where Democrats hold offices and key majorities.

Cedar Falls Youth Shoots Policeman Amid Station Heist

A Cedar Falls, Iowa patrolman was wounded in the face and head by a point blank shotgun blast during a chase of a 17 year old suspect in an armed service station holdup. The youth, Albert Leroy Fullbright, fled, was captured six blocks away, and faces charges of assault with intent to murder, auto theft, and robbery with aggravation.

Red Cross swim schedule updated for Washington summer

Neal Lampkin, director of the Red Cross summer learnto-swim program, announces a change. All advanced beginners now report to the municipal pool Thursdays at 9 a.m. Enrollments close June 14 with first classes starting June 20. Other weekly times remain as before including Washington Mondays at 9 a.m., Ainsworth 9:45, Crawfordsville 10:30, and so on through Friday. There is still room in Washington and rural groups.

Topeka Tornado Death Toll Rises. Wide-Scale Damage Seen

Rescue teams searched a tornado struck Topeka Kansas where at least 15 people were known dead and 20 to 30 feared missing. Federal aid was pledged as millions in damages hit Washburn University and hundreds of homes and businesses.

West Point star saves allies in Kontum siege

UPI reports two U S Army helicopter rescues lifted eight wounded from paratroop units of the 101st Airborne in Kontum. Capt Bill Carpenter of West Point famed lonesome end called napalm strikes on his own position to aid the surrounded company as heavy enemy fire blocked landings. Brigade commander Willard Pearson praised the defense and vowed relief efforts amid a four day battle that left hundreds of enemy dead and involved multiple heroic rescue attempts by volunteers.

Reuther Addresses UI Graduation in Iowa City

Walter P. Reuther of the United Workers of America spoke at the University of Iowa commencement urging peace through science and technology, calling for Vietnam settlement, stronger United Nations, and bold action to fulfill President Johnson’s Great Society while stressing civil rights progress and poverty reduction. Weather outlook for Iowa shows fair skies and warm weekend

United Press International reports generally fair conditions across Iowa tonight and Saturday with a small temperature rise on Saturday. Low temperatures range in the upper 40s to lower 50s, highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s, and Sunday looks to bring variable cloudiness with scattered showers and little temperature change.
