A forest fire near Lewisporte, Newfoundland, endangered 2 million gallons of aviation gasoline stored by Imperial Oil. A three mile flame wall approached the tanks as winds shifted, prompting mass evacuation plans and mobilization of locals, fire crews, planes, and ships.
Six Japanese communist leaders went underground to avoid police after anti occupation leaflets were found. Hidetaro Ikeda was arrested as police seized leaflets, raising arrests to seven since Wednesday. Police banned demonstrations at Yokosuka base and targeted the red publication.
Personnel from seven Washington business establishments met in the ISU building Friday for a sales meeting. The event featured a showing of The Face in the Mirror and a round table discussion led by Frank B. Miller of the Iowa Southern company. Firms taking part included Eveready Plumbing Iowa Southern Peters Hardware Tom Duncan Booth Horak Klein Klothing Ko Scott Furniture. Another meeting will be held next Thursday evening.
A group of local men finished the Red Cross course for first aid instructors and are available to teach life saving methods. Participants included Albert Lay Dr Karl Fredericks Willis Jones Artemas Brown and Dick Hart sell. First aid talks and demonstrations can be arranged through the YMCA.
Lou Slocum Teeter Wester ville Ohio died early Friday in Columbus after a short illness. Graveside rites are at Elm Grove cemetery Tuesday at 10 with Rev. C Raymond Reed in charge. Her daughter Mary E Teeter of Westerville survives. husband Merton E K Teeter predeceased her in February 1939. Services are being held in Columbus Sunday afternoon before the body is transported to Cedar Rapids for burial.
Senator Len Brewster urged President Truman to open the secret diary of James Forrestal to learn if he ordered a delay in the Amerasia prosecution. The diary, kept in a White House safe, was placed there at the family’s request after Forrestal’s death. Truman has said the diary will not be opened while he is president.
Des Moines reports attorney Verne Law yer filed a habeas corpus petition in district court for Charles Walker 56 seeking release from Polk county jail where he awaits action on a 31 year old murder charge. Walker was confined since 1919 at Anamosa reformatory mental ward found sane by two psychiatrists. Officials lack a 1919 murder indictment tied to the robbery slaying of Mrs Yr W W Coppock near Ankeny. Local authorities also reviewing a 1919 rape charge against a Charles Walker involving a 15 year old.
Plans for the purebred Jersey show on the armory ground Tuesday June 13 near completion. Jersey dairy cattle from the fourth Town Jersey parish will be shown in Washington this year. Activities run 10 am to 4 pm with six judging classes. Prizes total nine dollars for first place six for second and three three dollar awards plus older groups prizes. Sponsored by the Fourth Jersey cattle parish and Junior Chamber of Commerce with cash donations from city merchants. Howard Freshwaters chairs the arranging committee. Public invited to attend all or part of the event.
Five barbershop quartets advanced to the SPEBSQSA finals in Omaha after regional wins. Finalists include Note-Blenders Oakland County Michigan Clef Dwell Antlers Flint Michigan Four rs Oakland County Chorders London Ontario Buffalo Bills Buffalo. The 1949 champion was Mid-States Four of Chicago. President Carroll Adams says perfection challenges judges as audiences listen.
Marriage licenses were issued to Charles P. Hennen and Ruth S. Miller of Washington and to Charles E. Bish of Washington and Fairer June Davis of Brighton.
Wisconsin Republicans prepared a resolution at the state GOP convention endorsing Senator Joseph R. McCarthy in his drive to oust Secretary of State Dean Acheson. McCarthy received a thunderous ovation, with a keynote call for Acheson removal as President Truman is urged to act.
Mrs. Homer Mount of Rothschild attends the H. W. Gossard corsetieres training sponsored by the school Co. to enhance Rothschild merchandising and improve customer service. Upon completion she will return to Washington with skills to aid customers in achieving the new fashionable figure.
State patrolmen guard the Dakota Collieries coal mine near Belfield after egg throwing pickets were quieted. Mine Manager Ralph Richardson says operation may resume with substitute crews, despite union calls to respect the line. Transportation by rail is uncertain as a boycott by Railroad Brotherhoods could extend the stalemate from January 12.
Two suits lodged with the county clerk involve Sterling Bolt of Chicago seeking 237.42 from Carris Manufacturing on an account and Brown Finance asking 283.05 from James F and Carol E Manary on a chattel mortgage.
The Senate ended a record 16 hour session amid a Republican filibuster on extending rent controls. Sen Harry P Cain delivered a 12 hour 8 minute solo speech, a historic one man bid. Senate leader Lucas hoped for a vote later, while Wherry pledged to expedite proceedings. Localities could set six more months if passed by December 31 1950.
Mr and Mrs William Bartow Quarles celebrated sixty years of marriage while confined to hospital beds due to fractured hips. The couple received $9 and 85 cents as an anniversary gift from an unnamed source.
Battery A National Guard members sell tickets at the armory during weekdays and for the inaugural dance on the new armory floor. Leo Pieper and his orchestra perform Tuesday night June 13. ticket prices are one dollar in advance and one dollar twenty five at the door.
The Youth Center hosts a dance for Boy Scout delegates to the National Jamboree tonight. The center opens at 8 with regular activities, and at 9 Artemas Brown directs square and circle dancing. Delegates include Richard Powers Donald Kerr Leonard Renoux Norman Benn and Charles Kallous.
The Knights of Pythias announce a special meeting Monday night at o'clock to confer the rank of Knight. Staff and lodge members are urged to attend. Regular meetings are the first and third Mondays of each month.
President Truman denounces the USSR for threating world peace with heavy armaments and aggressive tactics during a Jefferson Memorial dedication in St. Louis. He links Soviet aggression to global tension, vows countermeasures with free-world strength, and urges continued defense and foreign aid.
Mrs. Willfred Gibbs Moore Sr. of Winnetka Illinois was awarded the Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau by Dutch consul general Dr J B van de Mortel for Alpha Xi Delta sorority work aiding Noordwyk after a wartime strike. The ceremony took place at Northwestern University Evanston. she is sister to Rev R J Kinnavey of Washington.
Des Moines reports clear conditions today with highs around 7 and lows near 50s. Winds turn northwest at 18 to 25 mph, cooler tonight, then warm with highs in the upper 80s Monday and a chance of showers Monday night or Tuesday.
