Railroads of Iowa Seek a 24 Percent Increase In Rates
Iowa railroads press a petition with the state railroad board requesting intrastate freight rate hikes of at least 23.91 percent and equal interstate-equivalent schedules. A June 22 hearing is planned, though likely delayed by concurrent federal proceedings. The proposal argues for fair returns on investment and uniform inland and interstate rates amid car shortages and new ICC orders to ease congestion. The crop outlook has improved with 70 percent of corn planted as of May 25.
