Eighteen new cars and trucks were registered last week at the county treasurer’s office. Driver escapes injury after colliding with calves on highway

Reuben Leydens of Pella escaped harm when his car struck two calves on highway 92 three miles west of Washington. He was meeting another vehicle and could not avoid the animals. Both calves, owned by C. A. Phelps, were killed instantly.

Russians Withdraw Troops After Allied Protests At Berlin Border

Russian forces pulled back from two contested border points between Western and Eastern Berlin after protests from American and British commandants. Heat Wave and Storm Claim Midwest Lives

A weekend heat wave followed by a violent wind and rain storm across the Midwest caused multiple deaths mostly from drownings as people sought cooling. Fish Derby Set For Thursday in Washington

Preparations for the annual Kids Fishing Derby in Washington are near finish and 2000 bullheads will be dumped into the Rock Island reservoir before children fish for prizes offered by the Izaak Walton league. Everett Denison 74 Taken by Death in Ottumwa

Everett Denison 74 longtime Prairie Flower resident died at 12 15 pm Sunday at St Josephs hospital Ottumwa after two years of declining health. Funeral services will be Tuesday June 10 at 2 pm Jones Funeral Home Rev Walter Smith officiating with burial at Elm Grove Cemetery. He was born April 7 1875 in Washington County son of Martin and Sarah Denison. He married Iva Durst March 24 1904 at Oskaloosa and lived in Texas two years before returning to Washington County to farm. He served as Cedar Township assessor seven years and belonged to the Methodist church ALP and Masonic bodies. Survivors include his wife and one brother Newt Denison of Carthage Illinois.

Wilbur Darnell Dies in Wellman Home

Wilbur Darnell 48 well known Wellman citizen and businessman died suddenly at his home this morning. Funeral services held Tuesday at Powell funeral home at 2 30 p m conducted by Rev lb C Bissinger.
