Rome June 9 diplomats report a settlement path in the Vatican Italian government conflict that halted peace after a 60 year break. Count Cesare De Vecchi delivered the government's reply, optimism remains high though details and damages are not disclosed and work on specifics continues.
The 1939 Iowa Grand Army of the Republic encampment opened with about 100 veterans, down from prior years, at Marshalltown. A Shiloh reunion for the Hornet Nest Brigade was held as part of pre encampment events, with a tablet unveiled at the Iowa Soldiers Home and two trees dedicated to J W Willet and Oley Nelson. The meeting featured a fife and drum corps and hopes for Marshalltown as a future state commander candidate ahead of Des Moines' national encampment in the fall.
County supervisors reviewed tax assessments and made adjustments by township with increases in Highland and Cedar and decreases in Franklin Jackson Oregon and Wellman Brighton. Personal property reported unchanged and land charges waived in other townships. State board of assessment will review on the second Monday in July to act as board of equalization. Final listings await state action.
Eva Beatrice Dier of Washington earned a two year normal diploma after completing correspondence work at Parsons College Fairfield during 1927-29. Harold Lorenzo Johnson, formerly of Washington, received a Bachelor of Arts degree. David C. Davis of Crawfordsville and Floyd L. Whittington of Wayland also earned BA degrees. Forty eight bachelor degrees were granted. Dr Archibald Cardle urged the "The College Frame of Mind."
Capt. Jay Brown of Troop F, 118th Cavalry, received checks totaling 954.72 for March April and May. The payroll, the largest since he took command, will be distributed to soldiers at tomorrow’s drill. Attendance at drills has increased.

Delegates named were J M Kelly and Joe Peiper with William Koening and M L Whittaker as alternates. Over a hundred members attended the meeting.
Mr and Mrs F L Stewart and daughter Jane travel to Des Moines today. Jane Stewart will study at the Drake University Conservatory of Music.
The unit has grown in size and regularity, with increased distributions to the men. They are conducting mounted drills and gear up for the annual Camp Dodge encampment from August 16 to 30.
Washington county announces Camp Tecumseh on the Iowa river east of Riverside will run for two weeks starting Monday June 29. Rev F W Eastwood and Glenn Fordyce join as advisors and athletic director. camp leaders include Henry Bailey and area scouters from Riverside Kalona and more. Registration is 1.90 dollars for scouts and leaders with 46 dollars weekly. visitors 1 dollar per day.
Funeral services for Mrs Margaret Harris aged 62 wife of O Harris of Keota will be held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 2 30 PM. Mrs Harris suffered a paralytic stroke three weeks ago followed later by another with outcomes not specified.
Nashville Tenn June 9 Article reports that June A Horton was acquitted of seven impeachment articles after the Tennessee House voted to quash the remaining charges. The body dismissed the articles by 56 to 40 with 44 members present, meeting the simple majority requirement to end the case. The first charge alleging conspiracy with Col Luke Lea and Rogers Caldwell to defraud the state and extend his term was already defeated last week.
Frank Turley of Hagerstown Maryland a veteran character ad man says he is Cr Millikin in Brundage carnival town. He plans to bring roosters and roostering jokes as 963 pounds of roosters are expected. he lists past work with Ranch Buffalo Bill Pawnee Bill and Forepaugh Sells.
William Miller Sr. died this afternoon at his rural home four miles northeast of Washington after months of ill health. A longtime local resident, he lived on the farm for 23 years and was 72. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 30 p.m. at L A Jones Funeral Home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
A name contest opens for Washington's new city representative who will run merchant events for twelve months. Ten dollar prize, three judges, submissions due Saturday night, with entries accepted at the Journal office or by mail. an official notice will appear Monday.
Fred and Carter Glancey of Aledo Illinois visit Washington to seek approval from Mayor John W Applegate to paint black three inch numbers on curbs in front of paved streets. Owners may opt in with a small charge to help motorists locate residences more easily. The plan, already used in Kewanee Illinois, will spread to Iowa City as the brothers finish preparations for painting rounds.
The Washington county flower and garden show is at the United Presbyterian church today with dense displays of blooms in containers, windows, and wall vases. Visitors may view until nine in the evening as entries include amateur classes, gardens, iris, peonies, arrangements, roses, and perennials with winners announced later.

Deputy sheriffs William Guess and Cecil Crosby faced district court in Ardmore to answer murder charges in the slaying of Manuel Garcia Gomez and Emilio Cortes Rubio. They waived preliminary hearing for a jury decision on whether the shooting was justified.
Valparaiso Indiana June 9 Judge Grant Crumpacker refused to raise Virgil Kirkland’s sentence beyond the maximum one to ten years for a criminal attack charge linked to the death of his sweetheart Arlene Draves at a Gary drinking party. The prosecution had urged a five to twenty one year term but the court ruled the maximum had already been imposed.
