Survivor recalls guard detail for Jefferson Davis at fortress
William Bach, last survivor from the small Union guard at Fortress Monroe, recounts the Davis imprisonment. Davis, aged 57, wore Confederate grey and slouch hat, was emaciated and partially blind, his reading limited to a Bible and prayer book, with no conversation and strict guards from wharf to fort. The scene included Gen. Nelson Miles observing the escort as Davis walked arm in arm with the general.
