Tornadoes sweep across Iowa with Ames touch down

A wave of tornadoes swept Iowa late Wednesday, with at least 10 reports statewide. One tornado touched down in Ames shortly after 10 p.m., destroying a house and injuring no one. No deaths were reported as radar indicated several funnels across central and northern Iowa and observers noted debris and damaged structures in scattered locations.

Governor suggests liquor tax shift to licensee purchases

Iowa Governor Harold E. Hughes proposed moving the 10 percent liquor tax to license holders at the time they buy bulk liquor from state stores. An audit of the Iowa Liquor Control Commission found inadequate auditing and failure to cross-check monthly tax reports with bulk purchases, prompting calls to ensure all taxes are paid and timely reports filed.

Iowa House approves bail-out bill for area schools

The Iowa House approved a bill to move state aid payments for area schools to a current basis and repeal a 4 mill property tax levy. It limits acres for sites, caps superintendent salaries, and reduces the number of area districts. The measure, called the bail-out bill, passes 101 to 8 and goes to the Senate for consideration of House changes.

Bids to be let for Iowa county road projects

The Iowa State Highway Commission will take bids June 20 for 45 road projects, including nine million dollars in primary and Interstate construction. Three projects are in Washington County: 6.8 miles of asphalt resurfacing on Iowa 22 from Wellman to Kalona, 2.33 miles of shoulder stabilization on Iowa 22 from Kalona east, and 1.95 miles on Iowa 1 from Kalona north.

Missiles destroy Vietnams SAM storage in raid

U S Navy pilots attacked a North Vietnamese surface to air missile storage 50 miles southwest of Hanoi and reported destroying or damaging five MiG fighters on the Kep airbase. Ground action near Hue saw Marines kill 74 Communists as casualty figures rose with 22 Marines killed and 53 wounded.
