A big crowd gathers for Washingtons annual Ridiculous Day with sidewalk displays and bargain counters. Missouri visitors join the fun as parade prizes and Mystery Man contest awards await in Central Park later today.
Eleanor Roosevelt and the Tractors for Freedom Committee oppose traveling to Cuba to negotiate freeing 1,200 prisoners with Premier Fidel Castro. Mrs Roosevelt calls Castro's demand unrealistic and stresses the citizenry’s fund raising role, while others urge Red Cross mediation. Castro hints at a delegation including Mrs Roosevelt and Milton Eisenhower to visit Cuba.
Donald Anderson 19 Albia was sentenced to life for first degree murder of Harry McIntire a Fairfield pensioner. He pleaded guilty to open murder after a beating during an attempted robbery and was spared the death penalty due to youth plea and advice from others. A second man Thomas B Lewis 27 faces trial on murder and robbery with aggravation set for the fall term beginning September 5.
Howard Lins, chairman of the Washington county ASC committee, explains the feed grain program permits. Each farm has a corn and grain sorghum acreage base minus the acres diverted in 1961. Diverted acres must be used for conservation and exceed the farm’s 1959 average conserving acreage. Farmers should verify their acreages now to ensure proper payments.
Charles Johnson and Charlie Lucas announce the purchase of the Mobil gas station at 304 West Madison Street from Robert Broker. The new firm, J and L Friendly Service, aims to provide local service with two experienced partners in the service station business.
Professor J. R. Jones of Swansea Wales visits Crawfordsville staying with the Rev. Humphrey W. Owen at 915 West Madison Street. He travels to Salem Oregon next, then continues a U.S. tour before returning to Britain in July. Jones, Anglican philosopher and Oxford doctorate holder, is a former visiting professor at UNC Chapel Hill and will preach at Salem Presbyterian Church Sunday. His wife is Owen’s niece.
A couple from Columbus Junction about 20 years old were injured when their car overturned on highway 218 nine miles south of Iowa City. Mrs. May drove and both were taken to University Hospital. Mr. May was released after tests, while Mrs. May remained hospitalized. The car was demolished.
Adolf Eichmann faced films of mass killings and extermination camps shown to Israeli judges in a Jerusalem courtroom. The three Jewish judges emerged gray faced as Eichmann remained composed, while prosecutors said the footage displayed atrocities under his alleged orders.
A 22 month old boy, Carl Holmes, was fatally burned when a jug of gasoline was upset in a Legrand basement and ignited by a water heater. His mother Ar nold Holmes was also burned and hospitalized. she rescued the child but was blocked by fire. The house suffered minor damage.
A Washington gathering of residents, Iowa Development Commission representatives, and Iowa Southern Utilities officials urged stronger effort and financing for industrial promotion. Speakers noted a temporary drop in prospects, stressed hard work, and urged community cooperation to attract new industries.
Mark Lane and Percy Sutton, both prominent civil rights figures, were arrested in Jackson Mississippi after arriving by plane and attempting to use segregated restrooms. Police jailed them for refusing to obey an officer, as a second group of Freedom Riders continued toward Jackson to protest segregation.
President Kennedy sustained a lumbo sacral back strain during a tree planting in Ottawa on May 16. White House says there is no serious danger and crutches may be used temporarily while Dr. Janet Travell prescribes treatment.

At least 25 alleged plotters including union leaders Pimentel Escobar arrested. state of siege declared and civil rights suspended. education authorities closed schools.
Washington residents are reminded of the city ordinance requiring that rain water from roofs be disconnected from the sewer system. City inspectors will check compliance city-wide and enforcement will follow if needed. Officials say the measure has relieved the storm sewer load during heavy rains and benefits homeowners by preventing basement flooding. The rule also applies to new business constructions.
Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko is expected back in Geneva with the Kremlin’s reply to U S demands for effective cease fire controls in Laos. The answer could decide whether the 14 nation Laos conference proceeds. The talks recessed after Russia refused to back ICC supervision.
Sondra Van Wert an 18 year old from Hampton was elected president of the Iowa girls 4H club at the state convention. Julie Ann Roberson of Elma was elected vice president Carol Ann Hahn Moville named secretary and Sharon Dee Harris Alden chosen historian.
Farmers in Washington county participating in the 1961 feed grain program face acreage checks to verify compliance. County ASC committee chair Howard Lins says county staff have begun farm visits to measure corn and grain sorghum acreage and diverted land. Five weeks are estimated to finish all farm visits.
Buenos Aires reports show Adlai Stevenson meeting with Argentina’s President Frondizi and Foreign Minister Mugica. Mugica indicated Argentina might oppose unilateral U.S. action against Cuba while supporting Kennedy's alliance plan with conditions. Stevenson accepted those conditions and praised Argentina's recovery and U.S. aid programs.
Keijiro Takano mayor of Kofu Japan arrived for a five day goodwill visit to Des Moines. He met city officials toured departments and attended a Cham ber of Commerce banquet with Kofu Board of Education chair Yoshiyama. Takano noted Kofu’s destruction in World War II and praised Des Moines’ prairie setting and industry.
