Harold Mangold heads the Washington County Junior Fair benefit auction as weather concerns loom. If rain delays, the sale moves to Monday. donors are urged to bring items to the fairgrounds or contact the Chamber of Commerce and County Extension office for pickup and donations.
Crawfordsville residents attended a memorial service for Harold McClure, missing after a Lake Michigan incident. his body has not yet been recovered. The report also notes visits and gatherings of local families, including Harpers, Yohe, and Maxwell, with various relatives listed.
Gov. Dennis J. Roberts signed a law granting two days off a convict’s sentence for each month worked in a prison industry. The program aims to shorten time served for inmates who participate in prison labor.

John Park 74 resident since 1921 died at his home in Columbus Junction after months of illness. Funeral at Stephens funeral home Sunday at 2 pm Rev W L Sanford in charge. Burial in Sheffield. Born January 21 1877 in Sheffield Illinois to Robert Park and wife. Survived by wives Lulu Green later Cora Helverson, two sons Harold K of Columbus Junction and Samuel of Muscatine, two stepsons D J Helverson Alexandria LA and I J Helverson Carthage MO, three sisters Mrs Joe Chapman Sheffield Mrs John Green Sigourney and Mrs B H Cummings Iowa Falls, seven grandchildren.

In Chicago, Armour & Co. bought only two bulls and three cows as major packers reported slowed beef slaughtering. Prices above ceilings kept most cattle out of markets across 12 regional centers, with weekly totals around 122000 head for April, July, and past weeks.
John Arthur Taylor 44 former Washington teacher died Wednesday morning in Superior. He will be honored by Washington residents who knew him from his school days and YMCA activity. Funeral in Superior today then services at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wayland Methodist Church with Dr. C R Reed presiding. Correction notes that J A Koehler was misreported and that Mrs Henry Bergraff and John Arthur Taylor are surviving children.
The House Ways and Means committee killed a 20 percent withholding tax on cooperative dividends that would have raised about 25 million dollars yearly. The panel also rejected taxing cooperatives’ undistributed income, keeping income taxes only on cash dividends paid to members, including non-lari cooperatives.
Morrison Jr. was reelected president of the YMCA board of directors at a meeting held in the Y at noon today. John Owen was named vice president Clarence Logan secretary and L B Dunlap treasurer were also elected to officer posts.
Sarah Ann Boshart 83 native of Noble died at 5 AM at her daughter’s home in Wayland. Funeral set for Monday 2:30 PM at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with Stacy’s in charge. Survived by children Henry Yoder Edward Irvan Edna Clarence Arthur Katherine Edith and others plus siblings and in laws.
Rev T C Polk pastor of the Christian church will speak at the second union service in Central park Sunday evening June 1. He will address You Problem or Solution with rain contingency shifting services to the Presbyterian church. Dr E L Haney presides, Rev Milo Phillips reads scripture and prays, with music by Mr and Mrs Robert Everetts and Marilyn Caldwell.
Price controller Michael V. Disalle backed two pending beef price rollbacks despite talk of a meat shortage. With a nudge from President Truman, he aims to cut prices 4 to 5 cents a pound on August 1 and another 4 to 5 cents on October 7, starting with live cattle and reaching consumers. He noted a 10 percent cut already eased packers but hurt marketings, yet promised ample beef.
Paul Shearer, lay leader of the southeastern district, was elected on the first ballot as one of five regular laymen to attend the Methodist general conference in San Francisco next May. UN troops hammered toward Chomwon and Kumbwa on the central Korea front with heavy artillery and air attacks. Reports say Red forces may retreat toward a new line from Wonsan to Kaesong, while Gen. Marshall says the 38th parallel is no longer a stalemate and UN troops will press the offensive.
The second feature at the Fox Theater is corrected to Prairie Roundup with Charles Starrett, pairing with Alcatraz Island. Nevada Badman was mistakenly listed as the second feature alongside Whip Wilson. Both films run through Saturday at the Fox Theater per local ad correction.

Two men were jailed Thursday evening by sheriff's officers. Forrest Brinning of Brighton was arrested for intoxication and Estele W. DeLay of Washington for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. DeLay posted a $500 bond when appearing before Justice H. M. Putnam today.
