A coroner's jury led by Justice of the Peace Robert Underhill exonerated Fred Miller of blame for a Sunday automobile accident near Onawa Iowa that killed four people. The victims were James Gingles his wife their son Emory and nephew Stanley Folsom. Funeral services were planned at the Methodist church this afternoon.
A storage room fire at the State theater caused less than $1,500 in damages and smoke in the building. No injuries occurred as 100 to 150 people evacuated calmly while a 600-person crowd had left earlier for a dance. Projection equipment remained intact and the theater planned an evening show with the building airing out.
Iowa farms show 150 887 radios on Jan 1 1939 up from 139 000. About 72 percent of the 209 709 farms have receiving sets. Pottawattamie and Kossuth counties lead with 2762 and 2551 radios. southern Iowa records the largest gain around 11 percent.
Federal meteorologist Charles D. Reed reports in the weekly crop bulletin that early corn ranges from a foot tall to knee high and shows irregular development. Late corn planted recently is coming in well where moisture exists, while oats and barley are headed short and much may be pastured or cut for hay.
NOAA notes Eli Hutchinson, last surviving Civil War veteran in Floyd County, celebrates his 101st birthday. He recalls carrying mail on early rural routes at age 70 and would choose farming and debt avoidance if given life again, avoiding liquor and tobacco to stay young.
Commerce Secretary Harry L. Hopkins plans to move to Grinnell Iowa and buy a modest farm on the town’s edge. He aims to raise a specialty crop with help from Iowa State College and expects the venture to be financially viable without acquiring a large estate.
B O Schlottman Motor Co. safe was knocked off and $1400 taken. Detective Chief Tom Farley said the thief hid inside the building at closing time, with no forced entry. Three late sales accounted for the large sum in the safe.
Washington centennial whisker club chief Al Goddfurd says a parade will be staged Saturday night with members meeting at Central Park at 7 30 p m for about fifteen minutes. A 7 31 gathering in Central Park is planned to discuss the Chicago booster trip and other club matters.
A late afternoon blaze at the Warren Bishop farm home twelve miles northwest of Washington destroyed the house and a summer kitchen. Cause uncertain but likely oil stove explosion in the summer kitchen. Neighbors and the Washington Farmers Mutual fire truck helped save a nearby house. Junior Bishop, recently discharged from the hospital, was relocated to Albert Paul home. Insurance covered the burned house.
David Neal, 20, was arraigned in municipal court on a manslaughter charge from a fight at the Iowa Packing Co. plant. He waived a preliminary hearing and posted 7500 dollars bond. Investigators say the Tuesday melee, tied to union matters, ended with the death of fellow worker John Chariton, 25.
Mrs. Ed Hanson presented her dance pupils in a country garden recital at the State theater. The program mixed ballet and tap with group and solo numbers, featuring Morning glory, Happy Elves, Neath Miadi’s Parasol, and a final modern waltz by Mrs Hanson herself.
DES MOINES June 8 Ex Senator L J Dickinson names Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio as his preferred Republican presidential candidate. He cites Tafts name background and ability and notes Arthur Van Denberg and Thomas E Dewey as second and third choices. He predicts Roosevelt will be the Democratic nominee and warns voters about the New Deal.
County Agent J. W. Chandler reports 221 head of sheep sold after lamb grading at the Milwaukee stock yards. Nine were yearlings and nine ewes, the rest lambs. Prices ranged from 8.75 to 10.50 with Wilson & Co. Cedar Rapids making the top bid. Grading by E. L. Hege of Iowa City for 16 county growers.
Rev A L Preston of the A M E church will preach and sing at a special service at the Foursquare church on Friday evening. Rev W J Stevens announces the event. A special offering from the service will be applied to the salary of the A M E minister.
Big Giant supermarket opens Friday near the post office with 6000 square feet of floor space and self serve basket carriages. Keith Wells manages the store, with Bas tiaan Den Hartog in charge of meat and B A Roundy as owner.
Ernestine Herr of Richland earned recognition as an Outstanding performer after presenting two solo dances and one duet in a tap dance showcase. Her gypsy dance was highlighted among the performances.
Rain yesterday evening and last night measured 0.40 inch in Washington with some wind. No reports of serious damage. Temperature reached a high around 84 degrees and fell to 62 degrees overnight.
Mrs Mary B Denison died last evening in California after a lone illness. She passed away at her daughter Mrs A B Bell home in San Diego where she had been living for two years. Funeral services will be held at Jones Funeral Home with interment in Elm Grove cemetery. Born September 26 1870 in Oregon township Washington county she was the daughter of William A and Mrs Shanahan. Her friends called her Mate and she endured life’s trials with cheer.
Mrs. Rose Reid heads a committee to fund the cen tennial illuminated fountain in Central Park. The Ladies Aid society of Pleasant Hill church will contribute, with each member making an individual gift. The total gift will be presented at the club meeting planned for early July, with more contributions anticipated from clubs, societies and individuals.
Washington telephone directory to be issued soon will replace color codes with letters W J R M for party line numbers. Example 321 blue becomes 321-W, 321 red becomes 321-J, 321 green 321-R, 321 black 321-M. Directory size and listings redesigned for a more metropolitan style per manager L. B. Travis.
The obituary notes the longtime resident spent her life in the local community. She married F. M. Denison in 1891 who died six years ago. Survived by daughter Bessie Bell and her husband A. B. Bell, three grandchildren Marion Ralph and Lillian Bell, and great grandson David Scott Bell, all of San Diego. Surviving brothers are H. J. Glick of La Mesa California H. A. Shannon of Lees Summit Missouri and Ralph Shannon of Washington. A brother S. W. Shannon died four years ago.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Washington on their first U.S. visit. President Franklin D. Roosevelt greeted them at Union Station as 600000 citizens saluted. The royal party then rode to the White House, with military honors and a joint greeting by the Roosevelts.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Lloyd Lewis of Tulsa Oklahoma have purchased Dad and Pop's Snack Shack on East Washington Street and took over management yesterday. Both graduates of Oberlin College, they bring long careers in education and business and have two daughters, Ina and Mrs. Glenn Ki. Baile.
