Des Moines reports corn planting in Iowa at 78 percent by June 1, the lowest since 1892, with rainfall delaying field work across the state. Ten percent of lowland acreage remains too wet to plow, and cutworms threaten crops while southeastern counties show less progress than southwest counties.
Washington county reports 3728.50 to the Red Cross fund for flood victims with Rev. J. Reade McCrory as county chair. The total includes 3650 sent to St. Louis and 78.50 from a Crawfordsville church, plus multiple town and group gifts. Kalona contributed 762.72 in four installments.
Mrs Anna Fulmer dies from injuries after an auto crash Sunday in Des Moines. Cedric Mc Kiesick, 18, drives the car. she failed to regain consciousness at Des Moines General Hospital. Mrs W J Dooley ends her Muscatine visit and returns home to Bidon.
In Denison on June 8, Lawrence Chamberlin's mother says his craving for a glass of beer in Berlin has shocked her. She believes she can keep him from drinking wine in Paris. The Chamberlin family, once noted residents of Denison, were known for their strong temperance stance despite Denison's earlier reputation as a "wide open town."
Judge Charles A. Dewey presided a district court session and adjourned to June 11 for miscellaneous business. Rulings included partial alimony in Hesseltine divorce, custody and household article provisions, and a $50 attorney fee due August 20. A receiver hearing for Hinson v Cox Manufacturing was scheduled for June 15. Judgments against Sherfey bondsmen totaled $300 plus costs. Probate orders named Mayer trustees and set bond. real estate sale authorized to pay debts. Guardianship and annual reports approved with bond adjustments. Rent rebate approved for 1926.
A large crowd witnessed Hulda of Holland the operetta staged at the school auditorium. Everette Griffith and Winifred Allen led a strong company with fine singing and acting while Jesse J. Miller directed the choir for a second successful performance.
Miss Acele Clapper arrived from Keota to spend time with her brother Oraj Clapper this morning.
President Coolidge plans a special session of Congress between October 1 and 15 to tackle deficiency appropriations tax relief and flood and farm relief. Senator Smoot says the session will address contested elections and finalize a $5 billion tax reduction bill with Ways and Means in September. The exact call timing remains subject to three week notice before convening.
At the Leon Beatty post monthly meeting an additional appropriation was voted to equip the drum and bugle corps. Hight drums and drum covers will be ordered. A committee led by Maynard Brown et al plans the Wolfe Amusement Company appearance in Washington under Legion auspices starting June 20.
Sioux City Iowa June 8 funeral services were held yesterday for George Jepson a former district judge and prominent local attorney who died Sunday from a stroke.
Washington reports a clash with Peking over reinforcing the U S garrison at Tientsin China. The Peking foreign office protested dispatch of extra troops as a Boxer protocol violation. MacMurray answered that reinforcements are required to maintain open sea communications per protocol.
The light cruiser Memphis nears Washington with Captain Charles A. Lindbergh aboard after a Atlantic crossing marked by favorable weather. Photographers tested him on deck and near seaplanes as plans for a Washington welcome and landing ceremonies unfold.
Clarence D. Chamberlin and Charles A. Levine consider returning to the United States by airplane after receiving a $100,000 offer from an American organization. They plan to travel from Berlin to Vienna Rome Paris London and may stop in Moscow or Poland en route, with Hindenburg hosting them at the presidential palace.
Mark Carroll arrived at the U S penitentiary in Atlanta to begin a year and a day sentence for denying before a federal grand jury an incident involving Joyce Hawley. He was carried on a stretcher to the hospital after arriving from Greenville South Carolina where he collapsed en route.
An unusually heavy turnout is reported at the Washington road election with polls to close at seven. By 2 30 p m 1103 ballots had been cast across four wards: Ward 1 204, Ward 2 258, Ward 3 265, Ward 4 276.
At a meeting in the city hall the Washington County Cow Test association was formed with 26 dairy farmers as members. Fred Valmer was elected president Burrel Foster vice president Emmett Hays secretary and treasurer H C Finney Dan Swartzendruber and Ray Woodford named to the board. The group aims to secure production and feed records of local dairy herds and county agent W C Molison and Karl Schulte of the state college extension attended the session.
SIGOURNEY June 8 petition in circulation seeks a special election on a 2 11,500,000 bond issue to pave 46 miles on routes No. 2 149 77 and 85. Two thousand signatures are required to place the matter before the board of supervisors.
Multiple Iowa counties including Clayton Cass and Lucas plan bond elections to pave and hard surface primary roads. Clayton seeks 1.425 million for county roads while Cass proposes 1.0 million and Lucas targets No.14 paving with other gravel work. Local meetings and supporters push the road improvement measure.
A minuscule New Testament smaller than a two cent stamp is owned by A. Wiltsher of Hereford. The 11 6/16 by 9/16 inch book was found in a continental curio shop. Printed on Oxford India paper, it sits in a metal case with a magnifying glass lid.
