Washington dispatch outlines a Republican platform to be adopted at Chicago affirming Roosevelt’s policies with a tariff emphasis. It pledges to revise duties to benefit consumers while protecting domestic industry and labor, leaving details to Congress.
After the Republican national committee adjourned, allies drafted a plan to present no further evidence to the committee and to push their cases before the credentials committee or on the convention floor. Overnight, leaders reconsidered and decided not to bolt, though dissent grew. Knox Fairbanks and Hughes were represented. Cannon had no contests affecting him.
Neosho Missouri June 8 Miss Johnnie Davidson a known young woman shot and killed Roy Ramsour while he was attempting to kill her sister Grace Davidson The man had been keeping company with Grace until she forbade him to visit the Davidson home He burst into the house grabbed the girl dragged her to the yard and threatened to kill her Her sister seized a revolver and ordered him to stop but Ramsour renewed the attack Miss Davidson then shot him dead.
In Ripley near Barrs schoolhouse Elmer Jennings found telephone wires cut and a bundle of thorn switches left on his door with a note threatening his tobacco dealings. Major Becht and local authorities investigate while another farmer John Schuman is warned his tobacco will be burned if grown. Salting and scraping of tobacco beds continues as authorities work the case.
Springfield June 8 350 Pawnee coal miners resume work after mine adopts different powder. At Pana several hundred miners return as committees decide that miners must resume duties with more shotfirers than previously thought necessary.
James Speyer head of Speyer & Co. hosted an entertainment at Waldheim his country place Scarborough on the Hudson for all Pine Street bank employees and their families. About fifty families attended including several who have served the bank for over forty years.
A cyclone struck Charles City Iowa on June 8 killing W R Beck and a child and leaving three children missing. In Nebraska the southern tract suffered twenty two to twenty five deaths with many injured as lines of communication failed. Byron to Deshler saw twelve killed outright and many injured. Dozens left homeless and all livestock wiped out as crops ruined. a long casualty list follows with families named near Geneva Guide Rock Shickley and Byron.
Six men are dead and eight others in danger from toxic air in the Gold King mine at Gladstone near Silverton Colorado. Rescue teams faced peril as they pulled workers to safety while others succumbed to fumes. the mine was on fire and blocked exits.
Names of injured persons including Mrs John Shively and Edward Russell with connections to Geneva, Shickley, Carleton, Fairfield, Guide Rock, Riverton, and Geneva. Other listed individuals include Kioss Shively, John Merriam, Press Batley, August Fentell, A F McReynolds, Mrs Austin, Miss Young, Mr and Mrs Grey, Mrs Bennett, Lester Carter and a second child.
Louisville June 8 delegates named by legislative districts held statewide to pick district and at large delegates for the national convention. Unanimous endorsements mark the process as districts convene to select the party’s Kentucky representation for the national gathering.

Des Moines weather officials report June began with heavy rain, logging 1.41 inches in the first six days versus the normal 0.96 inches. This marks a strong start toward breaking May’s rainfall record.
One man, Tom Maki, is killed while another, John Harki, is seriously injured in a tunnel explosion on the Wisconsin Central railroad. Maki was trapped in a narrow shaft as the blast's force crushed him.

The line runs from Red Granite to Peysippi covering eighty six miles. Butte Montana June 8 street car service resumes as city lights return after a storm leaving the sun shining.
The Chicago markets show mixed hog trade with light hogs and heavy shipping grades quoted. Cattle and sheep receipts and prices span a wide range with bulk hogs and cows steady to lower while Western stockers and feeders and lambs show strength in places. Mem Mary Ann Wadham Hunt aged 106 died at Beloit Wisconsin after a long life spent in New York Mount Morris and Beloit. She dictated and approved her own obituary as family gathered. Her sons Daniel and Henry Hunt of Chicago recalled the lifelong contract to visit on birthdays and independence day.
Balloon owner C A Coey of Chicago accepts a challenge from A Holland Forbes of New York for an aeronautic race. The event may run during the July 4 meet in Chicago with hope of a three cornered contest including the Pommern owned by Dr. Julian Thomas of New York, winner of the Gordon Bennett cup.
Chicago won the annual intercollegiate track meet on Marshall Field scoring 24 points. Leland Stanford Junior University and the University of Wisconsin tied for second with 20 each. Illinois, the former champion, placed fourth with 18 points.
A dead man believed to be James E. Murray of Syracuse New York was found near Hampton Iowa. He had a swollen head bloodstains and a bruised throat after a violent struggle. A fourteen year old boy James Shearer discovered the body. All circumstances point to murder.
