Black activist occupies Interchurch Center demanding reparations

James Forman and followers seize three floors of the Interchurch Center in New York, occupying 8th 11th and 18th floor offices of church groups and vowing a black and Puerto Rican worker strike unless white churches pay 500 million dollars in reparations. The protest follows earlier actions at United Presbyterian and related agencies.

Cherokee bonds defeated again in district vote

In Cherokee Iowa the school district defeated a 1.8 million bond issue for a new high school and remodels, 55.5 percent in favor, 1,323 to 1,056, short of the 60 percent needed. In Massena two women died in a farm home flash fire, Cass County Sheriff reported.

Iowa Gov Ray signs two agriculture bills into law

Gov Robert D Ray signed two agriculture bills in Des Moines. Massive search for missing SAC plane in Bering Sea

In Fairbanks Alaska area a massive air search targets a four engine Stratgic Air Command plane believed down with 19 service members aboard after takeoff from Shemya in the western Aleutians en route to Eilson Air Force Base. Coast Guard and Air Force units scour the sea as winds rise and ceiling lowers.

UFOs Reported Over Washington and Surrounding Area

Unidentified flying objects were sighted Thursday night in Washington Iowa and nearby areas. Gifford Morrison described a blue green soap bubble shaped UFO with a tail moving west at 530 pm viewed from his yard. Jack Schnoebelen reported an orange red revolving object near Riverside starting 9 pm. Weather bureau suspects a meteor passing through the atmosphere. Other sightings were reported near Cedar Rapids.

Tornado Warnings May Be Better in Iowa

Iowa Civil Defense Director George Orr says this year could be safer as funnel clouds appeared but not fully developed. He notes more warning systems exist in schools and public places using FM radio tied to patrol or sheriff stations to broadcast tones when a tornado is sighted.

Racial trouble in Indianapolis escalates to fires and attacks

In Indianapolis a five block area of Indiana Avenue saw a supermarket burned and multiple stores looted. A white reporter was assaulted and fire trucks were stoned as shots were heard and arrests were made. The scene grew tense with police and black residents clashing while fires raged at the Lockfield Big Ten Supermarket and Blue Eagle Lounge.

102 Viet targets Shelled by Reds

In a sudden surge of fighting just three days before the midway summit conference North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces shelled 102 major targets in South Vietnam during the night and followed up today with four infantry charges on U S bases protecting Saigon. Allied war communiques listed 265 Communists killed, at least 105 in assaults on U S bases north and northeast of Saigon where four Americans were killed and 18 wounded. Sixteen other Americans were killed in action.

Nixon to press on with Midway talks despite critics

President Nixon will proceed with his Midway Island Vietnam War talks with South Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Thieu, amid growing criticism in Washington and capitals abroad. He kept a routine schedule in California with family at San Clemente as Kissinger arrived, and showed no sign of changing his approach despite unsolicited advice.

Inaccurate Salary Figures Reported for Washington County Special Ed Staff

Figures in Thursday's Journal overstated salaries for Washington County joint four county system special education personnel. Travel and misc expenses were included but will be covered by the joint system funds. Actual salary figures are lower. involved staff include director John Prochaska, speech therapist Margaret Roth, Nancy Shamdin, and school social worker Marjorie Steere.
