Lewis Piles Up Big Fund For Miners
John L. Lewis built the United Mine Workers welfare fund rapidly from June 1946 to May this year, reaching about 21.8 million dollars financed by a five cent per ton soft coal levy. Government forecasts project a first full year total near 724 million and by month end over 26 million dollars. Trustees have authorized 1,000 dollar payments to dependents of workers killed on the job. The fund prompts disputes with operators and government over control and Taft Hartley limits.
