The three day eruption of Mt Vesuvius has ended and residents of Tersion are returning home. Reports say fifty houses with 147 rooms housed seven families were destroyed. About fifty hectares of land, including forty hectares of vineyards, were submerged by lava.
Supplies and fire rangers fly to northern Manitoba as forests burn and residents flee Cranberry Portage. Airplanes and ships assist, with $1,000 residents evacuating to rafts on Lake Athapapuskow. No casualties reported yet as backfiring efforts continue.
Navy Marine corps officer Paul Putnam receives his wings at Pensacola aviation school after training in Pensacola and San Diego. He plans a brief visit with wife’s Virginia relatives before a cross country auto trip to meet his parents in early July.
County supervisors adopted resolutions to award contracts for grading on two county roads and construction of fifteen culverts. Tenteen culverts will be in Lime Creek township and one in Cedar. Grading covers nearly three miles of the Wellman Iowa City road north of Wellman and about three fourths of a mile of the Washington Wayland highway south of town. The day closed with a large dance and talk of creating an annual International Peace Day.
Des Moines University trustees including Dr T Shields of Toronto are defendants in 29 civil suits by faculty members for unpaid salaries totaling 21872.51 dollars. Individual claims range from 2646.66 to 90 dollars. Shields says contracts will be paid in full up to June. The dispute, tied to doctrinal clashes, extends to the Baptist Bible union of Laws with resignations and temporary officers named. A meeting in Forest City was postponed.

Pezin China June 6 The American Legation reports missionary Dr C H Hollman of the Reformed Church has escaped from bandits who captured him at Lunayenchoy Pakien province. The event marks a dramatic relief for the mission party and underscores risks faced by Western missionaries in the region.
Paris dispatch reports the reparations report is being shaped by Paris experts ahead of a plenary session. Delegates will return home after a brief 3 30 session and the signing is delayed to a later time.
