Sampson’s Guns Aid Landing at Aguadores in War News

June wheat closed at 1.08, corn 31, oats 24. In Cape Haytien reports cannonading by Sampson’s squadron preceded a US landing at Aguadores near Santiago harbor with no reported deaths. In Washington the War Revenue Bill passed House to conference by 137 to 106.

Harmony between City Schools and Academy Boosts Enrollment

A joint meeting of the city school and academy boards approved a plan aligning the High School course with Academy entry requirements. Expected to raise Academy enrollment to around two hundred within two years with proper leadership. The Presbyterian church communion service saw nine new members and two infant baptisms. Rev. Stark's three and a half year pastorate has 163 members added.

Runaway Horse Calmed After Several Blocks On Green Street

A boy, Harry Bennet, held the reins as C. N. Stewart’s horse bolted after papers spilled in the buggy. He controlled the animal in the middle of the road and stopped it without damage. Also notes Miss Anna Crawford elected International Secretary of the YWCA in New York and other local social items.

Gallant Hobson and crew sink Merrimac at Santiago harbor

The daring 1898 action by Lieutenant Richmond P. Hobson and seven sailors to sink the collier Merrimac across the Santiago de Cuba harbor entrance. They attempted to halt Spanish ships by blocking the channel with torpedoes and a wrecked vessel, facing heavy fire and risking capture.
