Fifty CCC veterans from Winterset have arrived at Missouri Valley barracks to refurbish the site in preparation for a new junior soil conservation camp to be established around July 1.
Garner Chamber of Commerce announces a streamlined July 4 with no speaker. Twenty free acts and fireworks are planned, marking a break from years past.
Visitors from the midwest and Shenandoah residents flocked to the armory and churches for the annual Community Garden club flower show. The Congregational church won first honors for best decorations and took the top prize in the amateur exhibit.
Police recovered seven year old George Hein’s bank after two bigger youths snatched it on the way to Sunday School. Officers retrieved the money and the bank, and George continued to church services as police investigated the attempted robbery.
Ottumwa reports the dedication of a new 38000 dollar nurses' home at Sunnyslope sanatorium Tuesday evening with talks by Dr Walter L Blerring from Des Moines state health commissioner Adah ll Hershey of Des Moines director of the Public Health Nursing association and CC W Kammeier of Des Moines executive secretary of the Iowa Tuberculosis association.
John S. Wilson, about 70, died at his Kalamazoo home after a four year battle with stroke. He served as county recorder for four years and lived in Kalamazoo for over a decade. Survived by his wife, four daughters Beth Leila Frances and Helen all in Kalamazoo, and son Palmer Wilson of Dallas Center Iowa. Also five brothers and a half sister. Funeral services planned in Kalamazoo with burial there.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Laffer and daughter Florence of Ft. Dodge and Chester Patterson of Dubuque arrived Saturday evening called by the sudden death of their mother Mrs. L S Patterson. Mrs Chester Patterson and children Bob and Carol Jean of Dubuque and Mrs Everett Patterson of Rockford came yesterday.
About 450 children enrolled at six daily vacation Bible schools in Washington churches as sessions began for two weeks. Schools include Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, United Presbyterian, Foursquare and Trinity Lutheran with plans to reach around 500 by week’s end. Christian church school opens next Monday.
Joseph Whitnah Nebergall 73 died at 7 15 a m at his home 822 North Second avenue after years of ill health. Funeral set for Wednesday at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack. burial in Kim Grove cemetery. He was born Sept 7 1865 in Fulton county IL and moved to Washington area decades ago. Survived by wife Rose M Hering two children Alvin Nebergall and Mrs Leslie Gates. one son Chester Arthur died in infancy. three grandchildren Evalyn Nebergall Robert Gates Kimball Gates. sisters Sadie Kernal Wadehnah MN and Carrie Manly Macomb.
Sheriff Putnam announced renewal application blanks are available in outlying towns and at the Washington County Court House to ease crowding. The court house remains the primary source where old licenses can be stamped and validated if delays occur after July 5.
Troop F of the 113th Cavalry will receive pay totaling $1 018.70, per Captain O J Brown. Regular drill resumes this week after Memorial Day observance Tuesday replacing last week’s Monday session.
Chief of Police Jay Brown asks drivers to avoid parking on the soft dirt shoulder of the new pavement between South Iowa Avenue and Elm Grove Cemetery during the carnival at the troop field. Park only in the lot or nearby roads to protect the shoulder.
Wilburn A. Marshall and Mary A. Nickerson, both of Washington, secured a marriage license here on Saturday.
Dr. W. H. Kadeseh of Iowa State Teachers College will administer placement tests for prospective students on Friday June 9 in the Washington high school, room 2061, starting at 9 am. Tests will take most of the day and results will aid advisors when students arrive for the fall term.
London June 5 Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain told the house of commons the sinking of the British submarine Thetis with 99 deaths was not due to overload. He cited flooding of two forward compartments via a torpedo tube and promised a full public inquiry. Liverpool reports water entered the No 5 torpedo tube and builders Campbells Laird consider damage or door fail to seal.
Washington young people were members of the graduating class who received diplomas at the commencement exercises of the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. They include John Allen Coulter, Rogert Allen Eicher, Thelma Frances Long, Catherine M. Masson, Frederick Earl Smith, Kathryn L Stewart, Evelyn M. Watson, Beatrice B. Wilson. two later graduates in nursing Wellman include Helen P. Anderson and Jean Mary McElintosh, Crawfordsville, Kenneth M. Lemon of Keota, Dwight Leroy Harley.
Washington dispatch reports four year contracts awarded to Iowa City carriers Vincent Shalla Charles Souck and D W Nebel for star route mail service. The National Star Route Mail Carriers Association lobbies for permanent lifetime jobs, with past bills vetoed or deemed too broad.

Florence E. Patterson widow of L S Patterson dies at 76 after a cerebral hemorrhage at home. Active in Washington church groups PEO and Eastern Star she resided at 717 West Main. Funeral 2:30 pm at L A Jones. burial Elm Grove Cemetery. survivors include daughter Mrs Florence Laffer.
Mrs. Patterson, widow of L. B. Patterson, had lived at home since her husband traveled as a salesman. Surviving children are Florence Laffer of Ft. Dodge Iowa Chester Patterson of Rockford Ill and Everett Patterson deceased. Grandchildren Florence Laffer Rob ert and Carol Jean Patterson. Funeral attended by family members.
Graduation exercises were held at St James School with seven o clock mass celebrated by Rev Henry J Corcoran. Graduates William Barth William Houseal and Francis Schneider received their diplomas after mass and earned awards for excellence perfect attendance and most faithful altar boy. Father Corcoran delivered a splendid sermon and the graduates received Holy Communion followed by benediction.
The U S Supreme Court today upheld a injunction blocking Mayor Frank Hague and Jersey City officials from restricting civil liberties. The decision, 5 to 2, marks one of several major rulings concluding the term with five separate opinions.
A joint meeting of American Legion and Auxiliary posts in Washington County is planned for Tuesday evening June 20 at Oakwood Pavilion. The event includes a dance and floor show with admission 75 cents per couple or 50 cents for a single. The gathering will also elect officers for the county organization.
