A Worthy Cause for Streambank Erosion Action
Congressman Fred Schwengel of Iowa with 20 co sponsors seeks to authorize the army corps of engineers to undertake streambank erosion projects. Current authority is lacking though the corps and soil conservation service show limited roles in flood control and watershed development. The corps’ study highlights 549000 miles of streambanks eroded and 148000 miles seriously affected. Other agencies like the conservation service or reclamation body are considered as possible actors. The issue demands action now.

Iowa Veterans Face Back State Income Taxes
A conservative Iowa estimate puts about 30 000 veterans who served 1955 through 1968 liable for state income taxes on military pay. Officials cite legal changes since 1955 and 1957 that complicate tax status, plus slow state processing and conflicting guidance from military officers.
