Newton man charged in hold up shooting spree
Elmer Comstock, 49, Newton tavern operator, remained in critical condition with two gunshot wounds to the abdomen at Skiff hospital. Thomas Dodd, a parolee, was arrested after a Friday Des Moines sighting and is expected to face assault with intent to murder and armed robbery or robbery with aggravation charges. Two other victims, Policeman Charles Hutchins and Gloria Fox, identified Dodd as the gunman. Hutchins was listed serious and Fox good. The spree began when Dodd forced Comstock and Fox to return to the tavern area and then to Fox’s apartment before the Cardinal Inn and a country drive where Hutchins was shot.
