Ottumwa union president Louis May said Thursday that management and union officials had not reached an agreement regarding the work stoppage in the hog kill department at John Morrell and Co. packing plant.
City council and attorney F. J. Mackey move to draft a curfew ordinance with teeth. The proposal would require youths under 16 to be off the streets by 10 15 p m unless they are with parents or an acceptable adult.
Governor Bourke Bourke Hickenlooper named a 15 member Iowa industrial and defense commission to supervise state national defense activities and coordinate war defense efforts of counties and municipalities. Twelve members come from the previous Wilson commission and three are new appointees.
The Iowa state board of social welfare said about 81 000 of 54 000 old age pensioners will receive higher allotments by next month to offset rising living costs. Seventeen thousand already gained increases in June, and 14 000 more will see similar boosts in July.
Eugene Ries, 15, of Ringsted, is hospitalized in Estherville with serious wounds after a hunting accident. He and his brother were leaning over a bridge when a rifle discharged. his parents struggled to find a physician, seeking care first in Ringsted then Armstrong before taking him to Estherville for treatment.
Everett Paul Cook a 21 year old Fairfield soldier on furlough pleaded guilty to larceny of an automobile. He admitted stealing a car in Ottumwa and wrecking it west of Batavia. He was sentenced to an indeterminate term not to exceed 10 years in the Anamosa Reformatory.
Traffic on the Rock Island line was restored Thursday after 36 hours of suspension due to a washout near Oxford. Crews built a new 40 foot bridge as eight Johnson county bridges were washed out and three demolished, with twelve culverts and bridges damaged.
President Roosevelt declared striking coal miners risk losing their selective service deferments. He urged the 530,000 UMW workers to return to work by Monday, citing a simple rule applying to all essential industry workers.
Allied naval forces bombarded Pantelleria in two shellings within 12 hours, hitting the harbor while facing light opposition. After 27 days of bombardment the 32 square mile island showed continued damage as Italy prepared for potential Sicily and Sardinia attacks.
Pro allied army forces revolted against President Ramon Castillo in Buenos Aires on June 4. Rebels moved from surrounding suburbs toward Plaza De Mayo, seizing key outlying districts and advancing with cannon and machine guns. Castillo reportedly fled to a harbor ship as rebels secured naval support and radio proclamations urged unity and alliance with the Americas.
Centerville newcomers Mr. and Mrs. Marion Swan arrive this week to take over the Benteco market on the north side of the square. Mr. Swanson replaces Monte Randall who moves to Benteco in Muscatine as manager. Randall has led the local store seven months and departs as the Muscatine manager assumes duty. The Swans reside at 908 East Main Street.
Registration of all willing non farm residential workers for the Iowa food production program will occur in Washington county on June 8 9 and 10. Volunteers must state availability and may be used next year if demand does not require current labor. Registrations take place at listed local sites including Ainsworth Eclipse Lumber Brigh ton Clark's grocery Crawfordsville Rathmel's locker Kalona Miller oil Riverside.

The Keota driver of the car passed earlier, Mrs. F H Kitzmer, was not hit while relatives waited for a Rock Island train arrival.
Two Emmons youths drowned while rowing across Twin Lakes near the Minnesota border after finishing exams. Three high school classmates tried to rescue them in another boat but failed.
George Masson Jr. returns to his post at Fort Bliss Texas after a furlough spent with his parents Mr and Mrs George Masson The return occurred last night as he resumed duties with the post command and unit.
John Widmer aged 68 or 63 depending on line died yesterday at his home west of Wayland after months of poor health. Short services are set for Sunday at 1:45 pm at the Widmer home, then 2:30 pm at Hicher church near Noble. Burial in Hicher Cemetery. Rev. Leonard Mapzder to lead. Stalcum funeral home of Wayland listed.
Nile Clark Kinnick Jr., 1939 national grid star and Heisman winner from Iowa, died in Navy air service action aboard an aircraft carrier. The Omaha native, famed for playing 60 minutes per game in 1939, had enlisted before Pearl Harbor and later studied law after graduating in 1940. His death was confirmed by his parents with no details on where he perished.
The sewing machine owned by Mrs. Jesper Wilson of Traer, in use since 1887 with one shuttle replacement, was cleaned oiled and adjusted by Iowa State College trainer Elizabeth Peterson. Attendees say the 55 year old machine did excellent work after repair.
Ferdinand Widmer died at his home after a long life in the local Mennonite community. Born February 24 1875 in Germany he came to the United States about 40 years ago. He married Sarah Graber 22 years ago and leaves his wife and son Glenn in military service at Fort Riley Kansas. He is survived by a brother Peter near Wayland a brother Jacob in Germany and two sisters in France. He was a member of the BKicher Mennonite church.
