Harold Huffman, 4, son of Glenn and Mrs Huffman, living northeast of Bloomfield, fell into a well. His father descended twice to aid him and both were rescued by a hired hand using lines from a harness. The well held 15 feet of water.
Two hundred depositors of the closed Peoples Trust and Savings Bank in Clinton protested a plan to spend 35000 to rebuild and lease the building to Sears Roebuck. They urged rapid liquidation of remaining assets and Judge J Purcell denied the bank proposal.
H. A. Larson of Cedar Falls was fined $20 for attempting to keep his dog when a city dog catcher tried to take it to the pound. He allegedly threatened the officer during the incident. The dog catcher retained custody of the dog.
In Marshalltown a Christmas surprise came after a dinner hosted by FL. McCamm and following the sale of his bottling plant. The employer discovered checks totaling 4400 dollars given to four families and two men amid the holiday goodwill.
Angora cat, owned by the Wolfe family, was nursing four infant rabbits found in a straw pile. The discovery led children to place the fragile young in a basket, but the cat moved the litter to her nest and has now shifted attention after losing four kittens.
DES MOINES A serious infestation of grasshoppers in ten widely scattered areas in the state was reported by the town agricultural department. Shelby and adjoining counties are most seriously affected. New seedings of alfalfa have been damaged by the pests and damage is expected to peak after the first alfalfa crop is harvested and the small grain crops mature.
Humboldt Judge D F Cavie announced the eleventh annual Lawyers Chautauqua will be held at Lake Okoboji June 12 to 14. The program includes roundtable discussions addresses musical concerts golf and bridge tournaments open to Northwest Bar Association members and families free of charge.
Members of the Black Hawk county national dairy judging team seek end to a string of misfortunes before the international contest in Maglkind late this month. Quarantines hit Vincent Kelly and Clinton Sant Kelly at ISU, while coach Paul Pareer is sidelined with mumps. If Barger recovers in time and no one else falls ill, the team sails June 17 from New York to England.
The Iowa state horticultural department reports many inquiries about the spring canker worm. The pest harms elm trees statewide as pupae overwinter underground and emerge as moths in spring. An arsenate of lead spray at 10 pounds per 50 gallons of water is advised for control.
Dr B F Schwartz urged eighth grade graduates to value farm life and neighborly ties, warning against parental selfishness. He praised 4 H clubs and education, saying leaders will come from Iowa. Rural choirs under Prof A C Fullerton performed, with students earning scholarships and citizenship honors.
John V. Hoefert 90, died at his son Earl’s home three miles east of town after a short illness. Born January 7, 1846 in Tonowand New York, he moved from English River township to Iowa City then to Wellman. Survived by six children in Iowa and California, a half sister and brother, numerous grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Baptist church with Odd Fellows in service. burial in Wellman cemetery.
Local promoter Bill Brown said tonight's V. W. wrestling show is cancelled. A replacement will be held this month only after the right kind of accord is secured, due to Kurt Wampler's injury and dissatisfaction with the substitute offered.

P. W. Sperry of Los Angeles and his mother Mrs. Kate Kaster of Mediapolis visited the 8S. W. Kaster home yesterday and returned to Mediapolis in the evening. Mr. Sperry is an uncle of Mr. Kaeter.

A raid on 12 locations resulted in the arrest of Joe Stakel on manslaughter charges, while the graft probe continues with an appeal pending. Glen Schmidt leads the state bureau of investigation as more cities face scrutiny.
Enthusiastic women from Washington Ainsworth West Chester and nearby communities attended the Republican Women's club gathering in the courthouse G A K room. Mrs C W McLaughlin led devotions and Rev F W Eastwood spoke on The Part Women Play in the Community urging active roles in physical intellectual and moral areas including Red Cross work. A business session planned summer and fall activities. next meeting June 24 may be a picnic with candidate attendance.
Six persons were questioned after a $1,200 raid on the Farmers State bank in Merrill Iowa where two employees were taken hostage. Three gunmen are being sought as state agent Don Ryan led the investigation.
F. R. Norton and his family relocated from North Iowa Avenue to 601 North Fifth Avenue, establishing their new residence in the city.
In Cleveland observers see a Landon bandwagon rolling toward the Republican nomination. London leaders claim about 350 delegates on the first ballot with optimism that a first ballot nominating surge is possible. Even with no first ballot winner, Landon could surpass 400 votes of the 501 needed for nomination on a second ballot.
Seventeen Chicago children are booked for Washington in June seeking summer homes in Iowa to escape heat. Mrs. Leslie Dunlap asks hosts to notify by June 8, with transportation arranged in a week. Names and ages include Susie Sovic eleven, Helen Kobout nine, Olga Uliks eight, and others from Howell neighborhood house.
A large Washington delegation plans to travel to Fort Madison for the Iowa Churches of Christ centennial convention. Lost Creek near Fort Madison organized July 3 1836 as the first in Iowa. Pleasant Hill near Washington formed about three months later. A session will be held under the trees at Lost Creek with the old brick church house being repaired for a communion service. By century's end 365 Christian churches reported 85 000 members.
Funeral services for George F. Lewis are set for 4 PM Friday at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. S. P. Telford presiding. Burial will be in Keola cemetery. Mr. Lewis died in Milwaukee where he had lived seven years. He was born August 24, 1863 in Delaware County Indiana. Survived by widow and four living children Hubert Des Moines Lucille Raymond Rockford IL Louise Oak Park IL. two brothers Melvin L. Lewis Sheridan IN and Sam Co. Lewis Mulberry IN. sister Mrs. Alice McAtlin Eddyville IA. He worked in Washington County, Keota, Bloomington IL, Grinnell IA and later moved to Milwaukee due to ill health. He was a member of the Christian Church.
L N D Wells of Ft Worth Texas president of the International Convention will be a guest speaker. J A Dillinger of Des Moines state secretary reports an expected seven thousand attendees. The Centennial Convention will be held at the First Christian Church of Ft Madison on June 7 8 10 and 11.
Representative William B. Bankhead of Alabama was elected speaker of the House to succeed the late Joseph W. Byrns in a unanimous vote. Burns died early today prompting a state funeral planned for Saturday in the House chamber, with Roosevelt to accompany the body to Nashville.
Judge Oscar Hale of Wapello, a veteran jurist, will hold court in Washington Saturday to address local matters. He travels from another district due to heavy five county district workload as Judge D W Hamilton is ill and Judges J G Patterson and Frank Bechlyn have not recently toured the county seats.
Evangelist Thelma Hammond arrived in Washington and will open meetings at the Foursquare Gospel tabernacle Friday evening with public invitation.
