Citizens toured county towns to discuss the June 7th road improvement vote. While Wellman showed strong support and others like Riverside Kalona were cordial, Crawfordsville saw cool reception and misunderstandings about benefits. The county program aims to improve highways for all, with mixed local views.
Greta Hinton returns home from visiting Lois Holland. Mt Pleasants CC L McKenzie attend Grace McKenzie’s graduation. Eunice Hammer attends a Cedar Falls house party guesting Martha McCreedy. Barbara Miller spends summer with Iowa City parents. Several residents travel for vacations, visits, and graduation events. Alma Pearl Sartor born at county hospital June 3 to P FE O Connor family. both mother and baby fine. Additional visits include Great Falls Montana aunt, Havre, Keota, Des Moines, Washington, and Murphy family connections.
Preparations are finished for the Washington County Flower Show to be held tomorrow in the Marsh W. Bailey garden from 1 to 8 PM. The garden club invites men to enter exhibits and attend, with hours extended to accommodate country attendees in the early evening.
Washington Boy Scouts assisted by their brother Scouts from nearby towns will present an array of activities at Sunset Park this evening at 7 45. Dr A W Clow district scout commissioner and Scoutmaster L R Lupton have trained their scouts in many events to entertain and instruct Washingtonians about the program for boys in the community. The events include spectacular and educational demonstrations and many residents are expected to attend.
Residents and visitors share weekend activities and visits across Wayne Havre Washington Mt Pleasant Crawfordsville and Davenport. Cattle shipments are noted with several loads moved from Wayne and nearby farms.
Franklin Centre pupils led by Miss Mildred Davidson staged an engaging Friday night program at the schoolhouse preceded by a bountiful picnic dinner served by local families. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Roy Sowash of Moline TL and other visitors. Willard Augustine, recently in Chicago, is home briefly with an infected finger.
Miss Frances Harvey and Miss Irene Harvey spent Friday to Sunday with grandparents in Washington. The Dims of several families gathered in Washington for Memorial Day exercises. Ira Mikseh and family attended the Washington high school sixth grade graduation with Miriam among the graduates.
The list details students granted exemption from examinations by grade and subject. Seventh and junior high entries show exemptions in all subjects or specific numbers, naming numerous students such as Evelyn Bambric and Shirley Ayers among others.
A Peter son flower shop delivery truck driven by A. J. Peterson collided with a Roc Island engine at the North Marion avenue crossing yesterday evening around 7 15. The driver escaped injury though the front of the Ford was demolished. Obscured view due to coal banks and crossing gates not in operation contributed to the crash.
Arrangements were made for a Wellman delegation to Washington on Saturday evening in support of Jessen for the board of supervisors. About twenty cars are planned with the Wellman band to perform in Central Park. They plan to depart Wellman at 6 30 and arrive in Washington about 7 15 with enthusiastic supporters.
Chevrolet coach Mmil Fink sold corn to Marl Burroughs. Chas Lemley and children were callers in Titus neighborhood. Tuesday evening Dtatessee of Wichia W Kan sas is visiting his son Dave and family.
Appendicitis operation for Miss Minnie Miller reported as doing well. Visits by Sanehey and Bates families. Rural grads Wilbur Jackson, Mary O Brian, Earnest Myres among electh grade graduates. Madelon Givans to graduate High School Thursday. Community congratulates graduates. Clark Hopping family visited Lee Chambers. Ladies of Spread Eagle School district hosted a gathering with button holes and pockets. Arthur Birney returned from Iowa City. Dance attended by EW Jackson and Lee Chambers party in Washington with Redlinger Brothers providing music.
Mr and Mrs Chas Sojka and family spent Sunday evening at the Wes Ramsey home. James Beranek called at Riverside Monday morning. Mr and Mrs Otto Novy and son Dale visited Riverside Friday afternoon. Jesse Havel called at Milt Sojka home Monday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Herby Hartman and family and Mr and Mrs Jim Cherwith spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Melo Horak and family. Edward Beranek called at Chas Vondrasek home Sunday. Milt Sojka called at Riverside Monday morning. George Kos called at his son Carl Kos and family Sunday. Mr and Mrs Joe A Soukup and Bernadine spent Saturday evening at Richmond.
Last night 81 pupils received diplomas from Washington public school. Supt. J H Peet praised the class as the finest yet, noting high averages and leadership in academics, arts, and activities. Dr Naboth Osborne urged service to others and industry, while the ceremony featured solos by Carolyn McCleery and an address on equipment of life.
The annual meeting of the Commercial club will be held next Tuesday evening to elect officers and directors. Seven directors are to be named. Candidates have already been named to be voted on at this session. About thirty members retain their membership and are allowed access to the billiard and card room and bowling alleys at the old club house, now the city hall.
