Maris Hustles To Victory In Cardinals Sweep
Roger Maris, praised for all around play and daring baserunning, sparked the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the New York Mets in the seventh inning, completing a doubleheader sweep and moving the Cards into sole first place. Stretching back to the first game’s 6-3 win, Maris helped fuel a strong Cardinal offense alongside Tim McCarver and Mike Shannon. The day featured multiple NL and AL results as Giants, Reds, Cubs, Braves and others won, while Ed Charles homered off Bob Gibson in the opener. Maris’s hustle contrasted with his homer drought, but his impact was clear as he chased bases like Slaughter.
