The Clair Beaty household goods sale, postponed due to rain, moves from Friday June 6 at 6:00 to Monday June 5 at 5:00. The sale occurs at the Brighton gravel road, first house south of Simerman Hog Buying office.
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy announced he will likely halt providing documents or witnesses to the Senate subcommittee probing his charges of state department pro Communism. He intends to present his cases on the Senate floor and criticized the subcommittee for mistreatment of witnesses including Archibald Van Buren in the Amerasia case.
Former Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts, head of the Atlantic union committee, predicts steps toward a federation of North Atlantic democracies within two years. He cites a possible Senate Foreign Relations Committee move this year to back a U S convention among seven North Atlantic Pact sponsors. Will Clayton, former Undersecretary of State, agrees many leaders hint at the idea.
The Methodist Daily Vacation Bible School will meet from 8 to 11:30 a.m. starting June 5, instead of the previously reported 9:30 to 11 a.m. schedule.

A cloudburst dumped 15 inches of rain on Galveston Island in eight hours, leaving streets and ground floor interiors three feet deep. The downpour began early today and peaked between 6 and 8:45 a.m., crippling business as storm sewers and pumps could not keep up. Brownsville reported 12.27 inches in 80 hours ending at 6:30 a.m. with widespread damage from hail wind and thunder showers.
Justice W A Smith of the Iowa supreme court was given the state Bar Association’s award of merit for his service to the association and the legal profession. A Dubuque resident, he led the association as president 1941–42 and was elected to the supreme court in 1942. Harold J Gallagher of New York urged more legal aid societies and reference services.
Funeral services for L. R. Feldman aged 85 who died Thursday in an Iowa City hospital will be held at 2 p m Sunday at the Kalona Christian church with Rev L E Jones officiating.

Mercy Hospital will graduate Lois Ofelt and Louise Barnes at Iowa City Sunday night. The event marks 21 nurses completing their five year training at Mercy hospital with further training and state board exams planned in fall.
Members of division 47 of the Commercial Telegraphers Union AFL ratified a memorandum of agreement ending a 30 day strike against United Press. The settlement maintains a weekly wage increase of 221 dollars and includes contract clarifications. Prior to the strike the average weekly pay was 107.80 with overtime and differentials.
Ida Yoder 83 lifelong resident of Johnson and Iowa counties died Thursday night at her home northwest of Kalona Funeral services planned. She was born March 3 1867 in Johnson county and married Dec 6 1888 to Hiram Yoder who died Jan 11 1901 Surviving are three sons Lewis Williamsburg Cornelius Wellman Henry Parnell one sister Mrs Barbara Flagell of Colorado two brothers Bens Swartzendruber Upland California and Menno Swartzendruber Limon Colorado.
Washington reports President Truman warned congressional leaders he will veto any excise tax cut that causes a substantial revenue loss. The Ways and Means Committee pushed a broad reform bill with cuts totaling about 695 million, partly offset by closing loopholes.
Purebred Jersey cattle from nine Iowa fourth district parishes will be shown June 13 at the armory grounds in Washington. A livestock expert from Ames will judge, with teams and individuals also invited to enter. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
