Members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots association met at the Washington airport with chairman Lester Woods presiding. Committees named and plans set for a breakfast flight on Sunday morning June 27. Up to two hundred planes expected. advertising across 250 miles sparked wide interest.
Rev Carl F. Stiefel of the Ainsworth Methodist church announced a June sermon series on family life and marriage. He will open June 6 with Happy Family Life and continue with Keeping Young, Good Old Dad, Golden Wedding. The series honors brides and grooms and Father’s Day. On June 27, couples married 50 years or more are invited as guests. The Journal correction clarifies a mislisted fined individual. Robert Grubb, not R. B. Gault, was among those fined in police court.
Republican County Delegates Chairman Theodore B Bailey lists delegates for the county convention set in Washington on Friday July 2. Five precincts Brighton Kalona Marion and Seventy six have not yet reported. The convention may nominate candidates for county offices if primary winners fail to reach 35 percent. The roster covers multiple wards and townships with numerous named delegates and alternates.
Washington county AAA and township committeemen met at the Y M C A in Washington to organize farm soil conservation checks for 1948. Chairman Howard A L Witting said many farmers have completed approved practices by midyear and June visits will cover all farms. farmers should report uncompleted work to their committeemen.
Postmaster O. J. Brown announced a new mail collection plan in Washington. Daily pickups are now made from thirty two collection boxes with ecards posted on the fronts showing times. Letters will be removed twice daily in residential areas and three times daily near the square.
Chicago reports an 18 day dry spell across Illinois Indiana Wisconsin Minnesota Michigan and Iowa delaying crops and heightening forest fire risk. Forecasters say spring drought unmatched in history continues with hot temperatures and limited relief, nudging toward potential corn damage and irrigation reliance.
A marriage license was issued at the courthouse on Wednesday to Norman D. Shalla of Kalona and Marie Agnes Swailes of Ainsworth. A license was also issued today to Benjamin H. Rummel of Glanover Illinois and Mildred Ila Pressly of Airsworth.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Sherman’s funeral home with Dr. Fred Miller in charge. Music by Mrs J C Holbert Edna Klein and members of the Good Will club and Mary Martha Sunday school class. Pallbearers were nephews Donald Lloyd Edgar Jessie George and Walter Stout. The death date for daughter Bessie Mary should read Jan 7 1922 not 1902.
Morning and afternoon letter boxes relieve patrons from extra trips to the post office. The new service will allow letters left in boxes to be collected by postal staff, reducing the need for a special trip to the building.
Nearly 400 mothers guests and 4H girls gathered at the Lincoln scioor gym for a 4H Rally with the theme Friendships Around the World. Isabelle Combs presided as county 4H chairman and Lucille Gault led afternoon registration. Prizes went to Merry Maids Northernites Farmerettes Busy Bees and Dutehettes for 19 percent attendance. Cedar Clippers, Farmerettes and Dutehettes had most guests registered. The event featured baked goods judged by Good Luck and Northernite groups. The annual business meeting with Rosamond Sojka presiding included roll call and the secretary report. Patty McDowell gave historians report and Myrna Reeves introduced delegates. Today marks Speedway Food Store owner Fred J Speedys second business anniversary with remodeling and new meat department under Marion M Thompson. Dr Mildred Foster spoke on Your Health H Ruth Foster spoke on Reaching For Some 4H Stars. The Marion Maids performed There’s a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight and leaders were thanked with corsages.
Judge R G Yoder will be in Washington on Monday morning June 7 to continue the March term of district court. Judge Frank Bechly has conducted sessions locally and the two judges have arranged to trade summer duties with Yoder handling Washington and Sigourney cases for the remainder of the term and Beechly covering Montezuma and Oskaloosa. Minnesota’s per capita income in 1947 was 1990 dollars.
United Press report notes three presidential hopefuls on a western tour. Truman plans five major speeches with multiple rear platform appearances. Stassen travels to California for Warren talks while Wallace campaigns in Phoenix and Albuquerque. California delegates remain unpledged to any second choice, affecting Dewey Taft and Stassen prospects for GOP nomination.
In Washington the House approved a 3,633,1500 bill to fund the navy for the new fiscal year starting July 1. Rep. Albert Thomas cited estimates that the Soviet Union owns about 250 submarines, including 50 long-range German-style subs. The bill funds ship construction but excludes aircraft.
Rev T C Polk pastor of the Christian church was named chairman of the Washington Recreation Council at a YMCA meeting. He succeeds Clarence Logan who led the group since its organization. Mrs Charles McAvoy was elected secretary to replace Mrs Paul V Shearer. Plans for Teen-Agers dances and tennis courts were discussed but actions postponed until next meeting.
Dr. W. T. McIntyre, newly named administrative director of the United Presbyterian home in Washington, came Tuesday evening to assume duties. He will represent the Home in the synods of Iowa and Illinois and will base his headquarters in Washington, having formerly lived in St. Louis, Missouri.
Washington's official weather observer noted the mercury hit 9 degrees yesterday, marking the first such reading this summer in the area.
