Paris UPI Acting President Poher rejects Pompidou withdrawal pleas and promises a bitter campaign as leftists including Communists hold the balance in the June 15 runoff. Pompidou led with 44.1 percent, Poher 23.3, Duclos 21.4 as factions prepare for strategy and turnout.
Harrogate England UPI reports a group of young housewives started a horrow-a-granny agency for mutual benefit of lonely elderly women and families with no grandparents. Janet Harris, 36, originator says families miss company and fun grandparents can offer.
An intercepted memo references Georges Pompidou in Paris and discusses a hypothetical ruling if he is elected. The message mentions De Gall and Charlie and is signed with “Yours, WEJ.”
Postmaster General Winton Blount warned Congress that the current mail system risks a sweeping breakdown similar to Chicago’s during the 1966 Christmas period. He supported Nixon's plan for a corporate style Post Office run by a nine member board, with a separate panel setting rates subject to veto, and said the system could become self sustaining within five years. Blount noted mixed Capitol Hill reaction but voiced optimism Congress will back the proposal eventually. He stressed the urgency to act to avert future failures and costs from deficits and patronage.
Washington UPI reports Hubert H. Humphrey earns more now than ever after leaving office. He secured a high paying publishing job, teaches at two Minnesota campuses, writes a syndicated column, and accepts many speaking engagements since January.

Louis J. Kehoe 72 longtime attorney in Washington and Wellman died Saturday May 31 1969 at Mercy Hospital Davenport after five weeks illness. Funeral Tuesday 10 am at St Joseph Catholic Wellman with burial in Wellman Cemetery. Rosaries led by parish and Knights of Columbus tonight at Powell Funeral Home Wellman. Kehoe practiced 50 plus years with offices in Wellman since 1929 and Washington since 1937 and was active in civic groups including the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was born August 17 1896 in Farley Iowa. married Grace C. Green January 9 1918. survived by wife two children nine grandchildren and two sisters.
Communist forces shelled Saigon for the first time in two weeks and fought Allied troops 11 miles outside the city. U S headquarters reported at least 150 guerrillas killed in weekend clashes. One rocket struck a residential area across the Saigon River from downtown, killing two civilians and wounding 25. Four houses were destroyed.
A presidential panel urged resuming offshore oil production off California to drain the Union Oil Co lease in the Santa Barbara Channel. The group said the only permanent prevention against spills is to pump the repetto reservoir dry, which would take about two years of continuous pumping.
President Nixon met Japanese Foreign Minister Kiichi Aichi in Washington in a courtesy call. The session signaled pressure in Tokyo to hand Okinawa back to Japan as Prime Minister Eisaku Sato faces domestic strain. Nixon also prepared for talks with Thieu on Midway Island and pressed for a durable peace in Vietnam against Communist aggression.

A 48 hour deadline expired as talks proceed and an emergency session of the Legislative Council is planned.
Rev. Leland Grove will assume duties as pastor of the First Christian church in Washington on June 15. He, his wife, and two daughters will move from Laurens, Iowa this week and have bought a home on South Seventh Avenue. The vacancy followed Rev. Charles Cowell's resignation to pursue another pastorate.
United Press International reports the Memorial Day period produced a record three day traffic death toll with at least 543 fatalities by 8 a.m. EDT. The tally, including 543 traffic deaths, 200 drownings, 14 plane fatalities and 61 misc, totals 818 across the 78 hour holiday period.
