Clyde Jones an 18 year old ward of the state juvenile home at Toledo drowned while swimming at Lake Cherry during an outing with 17 residents and two teachers Bernard Hurley and Godfrey Messer. Jones disappeared after diving from a springboard and was later found in six feet of water despite artificial respiration.

Nineteen Freight Cars Derail After Washout Near Geneva
A washout on the Minneapolis and St. Louis line a mile north of Geneva caused a southbound freight train to derail after heavy rains. Nineteen cars derailed and tumbled down an 8 foot embankment with several smashed. the locomotive and eight cars stayed on the tracks. No injuries were reported. The train was from Minneapolis to Peoria, led by engineer G. B. Brooke of Marshalltown and conductor Rk. G. Mitchell of Marshalltown.

One Killed Ten Injured in Three Car Crash
Cedar Rapids area report states 31 year old Norwood Mevis of Waterloo died and 10 others injured in a three car crash 14 miles west of Cedar Rapids. The collision followed a Des Moines motorcycle entry from a farmyard by Oliver Lee Jr. of Des Moines and involved a westbound carnival show truck Rumoner and an eastbound auto driven by Mevis. Mrs Zimmerman in the Mevis vehicle also struck the car.

The body of Private Charles Edward Bidwell will be transported from Camp Bowie to Washington after Troop D's departure last January. Captain Brown and Corporal John W. Bidwell plan to accompany the casket to arrive in Washington early Wednesday. Bidwell, born June 30, 1922 in Washington, was a Troop D scout car driver and son of John W. and Minnie Bow man Bidwell. He lived in Washington since childhood and attended local schools. He is survived by his parents, his brother Corporal John Milton Bidwell, and his grandfather M. H. Bowman of Columbus Junction.
