Washington June 2. Taft and Ellis Ohio discuss a strong GOP platform pledge to carry Roosevelt policies. Taft favors tariff revision aimed at narrowing foreign and US production costs. Ellis backs an antitrust plank and federal trust control. An Iowa primary is noted as part of the broader 1890s political backdrop.
Des Moines June 2 Iowa holds a state wide primary to nominate candidates for November. The keen contest centers on Republicans with Governor Cummins opposing Senator Allison for the United States senate seat. Each side claims large leads, while nominations for governor and other state officers also proceed. Republican candidates for governor are Warren Garst B F Carroll and John A Hamilton representing progressive standpatters and Prohibition wings. Democratic candidate Fred E White seeks the gubernatorial nomination, with Prohibition candidates K W Brown and O P D Eliot and Socialist I S McGillis also running.
Minneapolis June 2 William Jennings Bryan has postponed his planned speech to the University of Minnesota students. The cancellation was announced by university President Northrup and leaves Bryan’s Nebraska tour unfinished for the moment.
In Washington discussions with governors touched on whether Bryan should speak in Minnesota. President Northrup said Bryan likely will not visit Minneapolis before the Denver convention. William J. Bryan spoke at Crawford Neb at a nonpartisan gathering, evading party politics while recounting army life in the Spanish-American War before a large, rain-soaked crowd at the fair grounds pavilion.
Washington June 2 bench warrants have been issued for Theodore H Price of New York cotton operator E S Holmes Jr ex statistician of the department of agriculture Moses Haas and Frederick A Peckham both of New York charging them with conspiracy. Warrants served to bring about their arrest and return to this jurisdiction for trial. Assistant District Attorney Adkins says the routine process will be used and Price may bail in New York to answer the charge pending here.
Traverse City Mich June 2 Members of the Michigan conference of the Methodist Women Foreign Missionary society can now enjoy punch without ban. The committee on resolutions and others oppose liquor but a majority voted in favor of punch.
In Freeport on June 2 a deadly clash between Italian laborer gangs at a dredging company site left one man dead and another dying. A third man was arrested after eluding a pursuer crowd for hours.

Indianapolis June 2 Senator Hemenway authorized a statement denying false reports about Vice President Fairbanks candidacy. The VP’s name will be presented to the Chicago convention for the presidential nomination. Any claim of change before the convention is absolutely untrue.
Antwerp June 2 report says the Red Star line steamer Vaderland incurred only a slight mishap a simple machinery disarrangement. She returned to Flushing after repairs and has departed for Dover from that port with no serious damage or injuries.
Sir Henry Buller, renowned English general who led operations for the relief of Ladysmith in the Boer War, died today. News from London reports the passing of a key military figure remembered for his role in the early 1900s campaign.
Cincinnati June 2. Bry consolidation unites two of the oldest strong banks in the region as merged entity. New bank carries 2.5 million dollars capital stock and deposits exceeding 12 million dollars with a surplus of 1.082 million. Charles A. Hinch heads the institution.
A touring automobile returning from Coney Island overturned on Ocean Parkway, New York. Two men were killed, and two others were injured. The dead are William D. Goubeaud and Thomas Nolan. Injured are Victor P. Bran dies and James McKenna.

Chicago June 2 1908 markets report official receipts yesterday and estimated for today with 12000 hogs and 15000 sheep and lambs. Hogs weak near yesterday’s average with varied quotes 5.20 to 5.60 for light and mixed packs. Cattle and sheep receipts also noted with beef prices 4.80 to 7.35 for beeves and lambs 4.25 to 6.50, while market tones range from slow to steady and strong in places.
Queen of the Ocean Mauretania, with only three of four propellers in action, neared New York after 4 days 21 hours 18 minutes at 24.64 knots. It fell 2 hours 41 minutes short of its own best time and did not surpass Lusitania’s record.

A special Minnesota and International train was ditched near Nisawa, causing the engine and three cars to derail. Baggageman Charles Yorn was cut out of the wreck and bruised. no other injuries reported. Wreckers had removed fish plates, cut ties, and pulled spikes from the rails.
