Weekend demonstrations across the South and northward politics
Anti segregation leaders organize more demonstrations in at least two southern cities while a Dixie governor prepares to press his race barriers north. In Philadelphia talks end protests against job discrimination, and in Washington the Justice Department advances civil rights legislation to Congress next week. In New York the World Council of Churches pushes for integration amid white restau pleas. Police arrest 421 Negro demonstrators in Mississippi as students clash at the state fairground. Governor George Wallace plans to enroll Negroes at Alabama and faces a federal subpoena as U S marshals pursue enforcement. In Philadelphia two injuries mark a clash at school sites where an agreement allows five Negro workers and a hiring committee to promote integration. The Justice Department works on two desegregation bills. A sit in in Tennessee and Georgia prompts federal motions for school desegregation and fair housing action. Students from the University of Georgia line up to receive diplomas today.
