A four hour Sunday blaze consumed the Luther College Old Main, a three story brick structure perched above the Upper Iowa river valley. The fire left more than 6,008 in losses, with only the ex am of the building remaining at dusk. Old Main housed classrooms laboratories and first floor administrative offices.

Attempted reconciliation ends in double tragedy

Mrs Annetta Gupton Dies at 67 in Ainsworth
Mrs Annetta V Gupton aged 67 died Sunday at her Ainsworth home after a month long illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 10 am at L A Jones funeral home with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born December 5 1874 in Guthrie County Iowa she was daughter of W O and Albertine Hofsteater. She married Everette R Johnson in 1898 and Owen S Gupton in 1916. he died in 1923. She resided in Ainsworth twelve years and was a member of the Christian Science church. Surviving are sisters Nora Ebner of Washington and Gertrude Hofsteater of Spokane and brother Frank Hofsteater of Ellensburg.

Mrs Sophie Elizabeth Wood 60 died at 7 15 Sunday morning at her home 617 North Avenue C after a several months illness. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 2 00 pm at L A Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens of the Christian Tabernacle officiating. Born January 22 1882 in Coaldale Colorado she was the daughter of John R and Sophia Miller Guthrie. Married in 1906 to Jess G Wood in Waterloo Iowa she moved to the Lexington area 51 years ago, lived in Waterloo in 1906 and returned to Washington in 1920. She had lived in Washington for 22 years and is survived by two daughters Hazel Price Sears Iowa Iona and Vera Duykers Davenport along with two sisters Henrietta Watson Burlington and Tina Renvenui Washington and two brothers John C Guthrie Petersburg Virginia and Tobias Guthrie Washington.
