Forty two additional miles of paved primary highways were approved by two counties, with bonds totaling 1.45 million dollars. Black Hawk and Story counties each supported 1 million dollar issues, bringing the statewide bond approvals to twenty one since May. The May vote record shows no rejections to date.
James Orlando Lemon died yesterday evening at 10 20 at his home 1003 East Washington street after a week of illness. Born September 29 1944 on a farm southeast of town he lived in this community all his life. He married Jemima F Malin January 17 1871 who died June 23 1904. He leaves two sons George of Montrose California and James Washington and one sister Mrs Cathie Weldin. Funeral services Monday at 2 34 pm at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr F W Eastwood. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. George is expected to arrive from California tomorrow morning.
Catherine Jane Hall arrived from Iowa City for a summer stay with Dr and Mrs H C Hall. Mr and Mrs Robert Cramp and their two children traveled from Mohall North Dakota to visit Mrs Cramp's father Henry Campbell and relatives in Letts and nearby towns. The week includes Decoration Day greetings and visits with Mrs Roy Hildebrandt and other family. Marvin Berry and baby from Keota visited G N Barclay’s home in Washington while C E Story and daughter Betty Ann of Des Moines stay with the H L Guther family for the weekend.
Ferdinand Preuse, responsible for kills on a deadly rampage that claimed two policemen and a merchant, ended his life by leaping before a speeding Northwestern passenger train after a long manhunt by the Metropolitan area detectives. The incident followed spree violence and a powerful alarm response.
The McClelland family of fifteen, born in western Pennsylvania and later in Musworth County, held a longevity record with fourteen reaching adulthood. Phoebe McKenzie nearly reached a centennial, dying near 98. others ranged from 71 to 96. Parents James and Elizabeth McClelland died in their 80s. A burglary at Hartman Bringman pool hall in Wellman was investigated by Sheriff Denison, with loot over $30 and tobacco taken.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jones who died in Oklahoma City are announced for Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the L A Jones funeral home. Burial will be at the Aine worth cemetery.
Paris reports the reparations issue settled with Germany effectively agreeing to pay about 8.808 billion dollars cost. Germany would transfer that amount in gold if paid today, with annual installments around 458 million dollars and interest at five percent. The final agreement is expected to be announced early next week.
Weather outlook for June 2 to 8 predicts considerable rain across the upper Mississippi and Missouri valleys and northern plains. Precipitation expected to be light to moderate with no major temperature departures.

Washington June 1 senate finance committee conference agrees to let Republicans press ahead with the plan to pass the farm bill and set a date for a Senate vote on the tariff bill. Democrats favor passing the DIL before December and fixing a November date for disposition. In meantime, farm conferees meet to iron out differences while Ralph Scott prepares a furniture sale at Belle Plaine.

Roe A. R. Grant, Methodist minister from Tow, spoke to the Washington High School graduating class yesterday in Vinton. The event featured the pastor addressing graduates and the community gathered for the commencement exercise.
Minuet Mannhardt traveled from Muscatine for Washington high school senior class graduation. Mer Mannhardt family plans to visit over the weekend at Mr and Mrs A B Schmoeller’s home. Catherine Coulter and Ruth Wson returned from Cedar Falls after finishing their work at State Teachers College. Merritt McDaniel came from Lowe City to spend time with his parents.
Hawer ds ville Missouri area observes Memorial Day with church services in the school auditorium, wreaths and flowers, a speech by Rev. G W Pool, and a procession to the cemetery. Veterans from Civil War and World War II eras attend alongside local families and civic groups.
Rev Grant of Vinton delivered the commencement address to 107 graduates at Washington High School. The program featured a 30‑strong senior chorus, a cornet solo, and speeches by Margaret Stewart and Leon a Kos, with the theme Dreamers of Dreams urging practical idealism and courage to venture beyond the seen world.
