After extended talks between International Molders and Allied Workers Union Local 159 and Crane Company of Washington a grievance is resolved and twelve discharged workers are being recalled. Washington operation proceeds smoothly with strong cooperation from company and union.
Thieves gained roof skylights to Montgomery-Ward Store in Washington and stole five guns from a wall rack. Guns include three .12 gauge, one .22 and one .30 caliber. Five gun cases vanished. Seifert's Store was ransacked with a false ceiling kicked out and three boxes stacked on a desk upstairs.
Inquiries to Supt. E. K. Schlapkohl list key late summer activities. Football practice starts August 16, sophomore orientation August 19 at 7 30 p.m., new teacher orientation August 20, junior high orientation August 21 at 3 p.m. Registration and fee day August 23, first day of classes August 26. A back to school section is planned mid month with opening details in the Evening Journal.
Thirteen cars equipped with Citizen Band radios responded to a spontaneous call by Washington County Sheriff Don Robertson and Bill Potter to test emergency readiness. Within 20 minutes 13 vehicles arrived, crews trained in search procedures practiced a tornado scenario, and families joined in. The exercise showed volunteers could be mobilized rapidly to assist peace officers during disasters or power outages.
Officials of Balzer Corp drilling in southwest Iowa report microscopic oil traces from a test at an oil well near the area. Arlen Herschberger, assistant director, said preparations to lay pipe for pumping would begin despite the microscopic findings. The trace was detected at 3,055 feet underground.
Rep. Lawrence J. Hogan urged 186 House Republicans to back Nixon impeachment, saying Ford's elevation poses no risk. The Judiciary Committee recommended impeachment and trial, while declining two other grounds. Debate slated mid August with House vote possible swiftly to Senate trial.
Director Jim Frier reports a record number of 4-H and FFA youths entering market beef swine and sheep at the fair. Poultry and rabbit sections also near records with 178 entrants in market beef versus 149 last year.

Former Nixon aide John D. Ehrlichman receives 20 months to five years for conspiracy and perjury tied to the Ellsberg break-in. Judge Gesell spares a fine and notes potential for a heavier sentence. Liddy gets one to three years, Barker and Martinez on probation. Ehrlichman vows innocence and predicts eventual exoneration.
Washington County Fair hosts Iowa Knights of Columbus campaign to raise funds for the mentally retarded. Members in colorful aprons roam the grounds trading Tootsie Rolls for donations with no expenses deductions, 90 percent staying in Washington County. The state wide effort runs during County Fair Week with plans for broader expansion nationwide.
Iowa State University entomologists warn corn farmers already stressed by heat and drought face rootworm beetle threats. Entomologist Harold Stockdale notes damaged fields in central and southern Iowa as beetles feed on silks, risking pollination and kernel development. He cites moisture stress lowering the beetle threshold to five per plant and urges prompt insecticide use if detected.
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz urged that cutting pet numbers could free grain for the hungry abroad, noting about 62 million dogs cats and horses could be culled. He said he does not advocate mass killing and instead farmers can meet world needs without reducing meat.
