Caracas quake toll climbs to one hundred seven dead

Rescue crews combed wreckage after a magnitude quake devastated Caracas and nearby towns. The death toll reached 107 with eight Americans among victims. Officials fear totals could exceed 300 as debris is cleared. American casualties include Bonnie Spiller and several Houston residents among the deceased. President Leoni pledged aid and requested funding for reconstruction. A food and medical supply airlift was arranged to Venezuela via Panama.

Milwaukee Riots Prompt National Guard Order

Milwaukee faced a severe race riot as National Guard units were ordered in to quell looting and sniper fire. At least two killed, 83 injured, and 180 arrested as the city imposed a curfew and sealed off major routes and expressways amid widespread destruction and fires.

Davenport man held on assault charge after party stabbing

Alfonso Bulley of Iowa City, 27, is jailed in Scott County on an assault with intent to commit great bodily injury charge after stabbing his roommate Lee Miller, 21, in Davenport during a party dispute over earlier pictures. Bulley held on a five thousand dollar bond.

Cedar Rapids Woman Charged Over Shooting

Mrs Florence Johnson 48 of Cedar Rapids faces assault with intent to commit murder after her son in law Robert Thomas 33 was shot in the neck near his southeast side home. Thomas treated at Mercy Hospital and listed in good condition.

Storm Damage In Eastern Iowa Crops and Utilities

A mid summer thunderstorm struck eastern Iowa Sunday night causing crop damage and power outages. Hail damaged 189 acres of corn on E P Willey Jr farm near Chelsea, while a Linn County hay shed fire destroyed about 1000 bales. Lightning ignited a car fire near Palo and damaged TV and caused smoke in Illian apartments. Marengo lost power for about an hour. No injuries reported.

New Wave of Violence Grips Several U S Cities

A fresh wave of racial violence erupted in Milwaukee Riviera Beach Wichita and Portland as rioters looted set fires and faced police with sniper fire. A policeman and another person were killed while National Guard troopers aided police and curfews and flight suspensions were imposed.

Two Cars Collide In Highway 218 Crash Injuring Six

Six people were injured in a head on collision on Highway 218 about a mile north of the June location. Two of the injured are listed as critical while four sustain other injuries. Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported victims to area hospitals for treatment.

Des Moines pilot is among the missing

Des Moines Navy pilot listed as missing after the USS Forrestal fire off Vietnam. A car crash on highways 92 and 218 near Keokuk injured six, with immediate hospital treatment in Iowa City. Victims include William Charles Marlin and Ronald Kyle DeYarman and their families.

Four Cedar Rapids teens held on bombs and theft charges

Four Cedar Rapids youths were jailed after Saturday night arrests on a northwest Cedar Rapids street. Police found two bombs described as molo tov cocktails, a pistol, rifle, ammunition, a bat, hose, and napkins. Michael O'Rear, 18, faced multiple charges including larceny and carrying a concealed weapon. three other 15 year olds were also detained. The group admitted car theft, vandalism, and park incidents.

Gilman marshal knocked unconscious by unknown assailant

Gilman Iowa police report William Brown 29 town marshal knocked from behind by an unknown assailant early today. Brown said he was struck, handcuffed with his own cuffs and his service revolver taken while investigating a noise near Jones Implement Co. He later alerted Gene Goldy and the Marshall County sheriff. no break in at the implement firm was found.

Forrestal Heads Toward Philippines After Disaster

The USS Forrestal, badly damaged by fire and explosions in a Vietnam war incident, steamed toward the Philippines for emergency repairs. Officials feared up to 145 dead with 69 missing and 78 injured as crews hunted for bodies amid chlorine gas and wreckage. The carrier, 75,900 tons, planned to reach Subic Bay near Manila then proceed to a U.S. yard for permanent repairs, with damage estimated at at least $135 million and 57 planes destroyed or damaged.
