Iowa Soldiers Bonus Act Approves 22 Million Bond Issue

The act authorizes Iowa to incur 22 million dollars in debt to fund a veterans bonus for those who served between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 1918. Bonds issued at up to 5 percent interest, repaid over 20 years, are to be sold to fund the bonus and related costs. A Bonus Board administers payments, with eligibility for residents who served and were honorably discharged, plus survivors’ benefits for deceased service members. The measure requires voter approval at the 1922 general election and establishes a disability fund and annual taxes to cover principal and interest.
