In Denver,Dwight Eisenhower and top Republicans plan a weekend series to set the stage for a hard hitting campaign. Dirksen Taft backers and other GOP leaders including Nixon Seaton Griswold Butler and Sumnerfield will attend to build unity and boost Eisenhower’s bid.
An outbreak of vesicular disease in midwest swine affects plans for the Townsley Park sale on Tuesday. All hogs at the fair must be sold for slaughter, stopping purebred swine sales and junior fair exhibits. Canvassing in Washington and county towns continues with many volunteers visiting 1,200 farm families and 600 business houses to seek donations for the auction.
Washington, UP reports Air Force officials link flying saucers to temperature inversion and optical radar illusions. Maj. Gen. John A. Samford says the sightings over Washington in 10 days likely result from warm air atop cooler air bending radar beams. Experts Griffing and James explain ground reflections can appear as aerial objects, with lights dancing in inversion layers.
Ten year old Martin Frederick Dreckmeier son of Mr and Mrs Martin Dreckmeier died Tuesday afternoon at his grandparents home in S07 North Avenue D after a cancer illness since last October. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 10 30 am at Jones funeral home with Rev W J Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. He was born Oct 10 1941 in Burlington and attended Mt Sterling Town school and Christian Tabernacle. Survivors include his father and mother three half sisters and two half brothers.
Tuesday Journal notes an error in previous report stating Friday as the end of summer classes for elementary and junior high music students. Final sessions actually took place on Tuesday.

Jones 72 of Oakland California husband of Terra Samson formerly of our community He is survived by a son Roscoe Jr of Oakland and a daughter Mrs Marian Latimer of New Orleans An Oakland Tribune obituary praises his long career as an attorney and civic leader who helped Oakland grow into a prosperous healthy city.
In Washington independent school district Tucs an, voters approved the school board plan to sell a house and garage adjoining the high school. Only 63 ballots were cast with 57 yes, 1 spoiled, and 5 no. The sale set for 7 pm August 13 will fund a school building addition.
Earl Enke funeral services set for 2 30 p m Thursday at Barton Funeral Home Winfield with burial in Winfield Cemetery. Dr Duncan G McLannon to preside.
Ainsworth north of town saw a fire at the Wayne Bitting residence around midday. Mrs. Bitting noticed smoke from the roof as she prepared clothes. A female helper and neighbors battled the blaze with a garden hose while the Ainsworth fire truck arrived. Most clothing and bedding were destroyed by smoke and water damage reached the first floor.
Riverside residents defeated a city proposal to purchase a filter costing about 2200 dollars to remove rust from the water. The plan aimed to improve water quality, with debate over rust from wells versus aging tanks and mains. Votes: against 63, in favor 3, two spoiled ballots.
Mrs. Anna Christians of Missouri Valley dies in a Council Bluffs hospital from burns suffered in a gas explosion that wrecked her home. The blast Monday injured no one else. her youngest son Stanley escaped unharmed. She leaves sixteen children.

The Washington county Junior Achievement show is set for August 6 and 7 at Townsley Park with 4-H and Future Farmers of America members participating in livestock exhibits. Department superintendents and judges for beef, dairy, sheep, swine, rabbits and poultry are listed, with health certificates required and a post show sale of baby beeves and market pigs.
Des Moines reports the Iowa State Fair predicts a record attendance Aug 23 to Sept 1 with over half a million visitors. Cunningham says 600 staff will work, premiums total 208,465, livestock and grain exhibits to draw large crowds, with cattle horses swine and sheep prizes and 4-H judging featured.
