Six inspectors from the U S wage and hour division visit about 80 canning establishments in Iowa under a nationwide Fair Labor Standards Act drive. The act requires interstate workers to be paid at least 30 cents an hour and bans child labor under 16 in canneries. Packers and canners receive two 14 week exemptions for overtime to handle peak seasonal loads.
Fort Dodge reports four men injured in a strike clash at the United States Gypsum Co. plant. Production manager Beryl Welty from Chicago met with attorneys and Fort Dodge officials as charges were not filed against the workers who allegedly beat plant superintendent R. D. Hess. Robert Schultz, 32, a strike sympathizer, was hospitalized with a broken back, along with James Deaton and Mique Coffey among the injured. Hess’s condition was listed as fairly good at Lutheran hospital.
Dean Mason Ladd announced Jerves Williams of Denver Colorado will join the university as an instructor for the coming year. Williams a Columbia Law School graduate fills the post vacated by Clark Byse who takes a one year leave to work with the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington. Williams will teach constitutional administrative law and equity and will also advise the Iowa Law Review.
The oldest strike affecting national defense production ended as 200 workers returned to the American Potash and Chemical plant in Trona California. The plant makes doris acid on government priority list. The strike began March 19 and 709 others had already returned a month earlier. Members of the Mines, Mills and Smelters Workers union CIO who returned received the same wage and hour considerations as the others.
Des Moines reports cooler weather moving in from the northwest ending the heat wave. Victims include Laura Elliot of Davenport aged 53 and Joseph Mitchell aged 85 of Chariton. Shirley Ann Stanton of Savanna Illinois drowned in Clinton pool as heavy rain and wind hit Oskaloosa Grundy Center and Muscatine causing property damage.
Des Moines July 30 The past week's extreme heat has strained Iowa farmers with the corn crop on the verge of damage according to Charles Reed federal meteorologist in his weekly crop bulletin.
Census figures show bakeries produce 75.1 million dollars in pies and 24.3 million in pastries annually. The data highlights the large scale of pie and pastry output in the industry.
A severe wind storm near Crawfordsville damaged structures north of town at Floyd Blankenhorn farm with barn roof loss and a house chimney blown off. Debris, broken windows, downed electricity, and heavy rain and hail were reported across Bethel and south farm districts with corn damage and a straw stack struck by lightning near Havre.
A southeast twister nine miles northeast of Washington struck last night, tearing shingles off a shed and barns, lifting roof sections, and snapping tree limbs. Across area farms including Gideon, Kolosick, and Redlinger, equipment and outbuildings suffered damage while rain and wind battered the region and telephone service failed.
In Living Lake, a severe gust at the R. J. Dawson farm ripped the roof from a chicken house. Glendale community reports damage west of town with further details pending.
President Roosevelt asked Congress to enact price and rent control measures to safeguard the defense effort from inflation. He proposed wage ceilings by labor and industry cooperation but did not urge a congressional act for ceilings. He urged adjusting wages to prevent inequities while keeping defense pay in line with nondefense standards.
Acting Secretary Sumner Welles said Harry L Hopkins went to Moscow at President Roosevelt’s request to coordinate United States production with Soviet needs. Hopkins arrived at 7 20 CST and planned talks with Premier Stalin, mirroring work by General Golikov as he secretly flew across war torn Europe.
The Oetjen Seed store relocates today to the north side of the square in the former Colenso hotel building. The showroom occupies the front first floor with rear storage and an alley loading entrance. Walter Oetjen says most field seeds move to the West Monroe street storage plant.
Elliston mayor E B Wietzke paid a 1 dollar fine and 4 dollars costs after a disturbance charge in Justice Clarence Thompson's court. Bert Morss alleged greeting by the mayor with Hiya Hitler and a later exchange led to a rock throwing incident amid a dispute near Elliston in Ringgold county.
Creston reports the mangled body of Edwin Douglas about 38, a railroad laborer from Avery, found a quarter mile east of Afton on the Burlington tracks. Coroner A. 3. Beatty says five trains had passed over the body.
Berlin July 30 Nazi high command acknowledged new Soviet counter attacks in the Smolensk region but said Soviet efforts to relieve surrounded troops had been repelled.
Chicago July 30 WP Railroad and union negotiators failed to agree on changes to employee work rules. The big five operating brotherhoods with 350000 members and non operating 800000 members rejected the carrier proposals and asked withdrawal. Management may seek relief from the national railway mediation board as unions end negotiations on rule changes.
Iowa's fire loss for January through June 1941 totaled 1.95 million dollars, about 500 thousand less than the same period in 1940. State fire marshal John W. Stroehm cited stronger local prevention efforts for the decline amid 2,132 fires in six months.

J C Penney store under new management plans to open Thursday after three months of remodeling. The Curran building now features three floors, taupe woodwork with blue trim, modern displays, 18 shadow boxes, and white leather backgrounds. The store is insulated, air conditioned, and boasts wider aisles and upgraded fixtures. Local contractors led by Jack Watson from Fond du Lac completed the work, with plans to send him to Denver for another project.
The House military affairs committee approved a resolution declaring the national interest imperiled and authorizing the president to retain selectees national guardsmen and reservists for the emergency duration. Vote was 15 to 7. The measure mirrors the Senate version with a War Department objective clause. A GOP backed substitute to retain only guardsmen and reservists failed 15 to 7.
The United States, via Acting Secretary Sumner Welles, announced formal representations to Japan over the bombing of the gunboat Tutuila near Chungking, China. A raid by 26 Japanese bombers struck areas near the vessel and the embassy, with no casualties reported aboard the Tutuila and extensive bombing across Shanghai.
