Mrs. Ora White, 70, of near Beacon, climbed a bail of straw to search a nest for eggs and fell, fracturing her leg. She was taken to Abbott hospital for treatment.
District Judge Frank Bechly sentenced Lewis Long of Oskaloosa to one year at Anamosa reformatory after he admitted striking Ada Kra mer, a waitress, with an empty bottle when she attempted to collect 10 cents for pop. The charge was assault.
Frank Peters of Davenport was elected president of the Iowa State Grotto Association at a Sunday picnic attended by 700. Other officers include George Beais of Cedar Rapids as first vice president George D. Miller of Waterloo as second vice president C W Peterson of Dubuque as secretary and Ralph Mabee of Des Moines as treasurer. Davenport chosen as 1941 meeting site.
Chariton reporters say Ralph Chamberlain aged 41 sustained a possible fatal head injury and C Robinson aged 55 a fractured jaw after a rock slide at No 3 mine north of Williamson. Chamberlain was taken to Yocom hospital and Robinson to Miners hospital in Albia.
The dedication of the Cedar Falls state park along the Cedar River for three miles will occur September 12. Harry Johnson of the Chamber of Commerce says the event includes a coast-to-coast broadcast on the Josh Higgins program and accommodates several thousand picnickers.
Dubuque county records show 135 marriage licenses issued from Saturday to Monday noon. County Clerk Val Kies notes many couples rushed to wed to avoid military conscription, with couples from Wisconsin Illinois and even California among the entries.
Gov. Stassen indicated favorable consideration for Wendell Willkie to speak at the DeWitt Farmers Merchants picnic on August 22. The event draws 10 000 to 16 000 annually and could attract at least 40 000 if Willkie attends.

A series of blasts and a raging fire trapped about 900 workers at a Camden paint plant. Many escaped under burning oil and chemicals while authorities counted bodies and urged aid from Philadelphia and nearby cities. Fire raged for hours as heating flames hindered rescue efforts.
Relatives report the death of Miss Sadie Strum who died yesterday while working in Galesburg. She formerly lived in Washington and had several feuds locally. An operation was performed recently. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Wednesday in Galesburg with burial in the city cemetery. Survived by mother Mrs Carrie Strum three sisters and two brothers. cousins Mrs O M Himmelreich and Jennie Strum of Washington and A K R Strum west of Washington.
Washington county farmers constructed nearly 50 miles of creosote barriers to protect cornfields from chinch bugs this summer. Ninety-one farmers obtained creosote between July 6 and July 25, and many secured oil from the government tank at Olds. The campaign was effective where barriers were well built and patrolled, though skips in timing or patrols allowed some damage. Overall county chinch bug damage was less than losses from drought.
Bandits held up two bank messengers in Asbury Park New Jersey and escaped with about 108000 dollars in cash. Three men approached the messengers as they left a private car by the post office and forced them at gunpoint into action.

The incident began when the thieves seized the bait and fled to a waiting sedan. Witnesses say both messengers were armed but the robbery concluded swiftly with no shots fired and no opportunity to use the firearms.
Three Washington boys of high school age were taken to the county hospital after a car crash southwest of town. Will Peters 14 and Junior Knott 16 in the rumble seat suffered broken arms, while Darwin Vaccha 15 had facial cuts. Two other boys in the car had minor injuries. The crash occurred about 6:20 pm when the driver failed to negotiate a turn and the vehicle ditched into a roadside bank near a lane to the sewage disposal plant. Front-seat rider Fred Durst 16 and another passenger sustained lesser injuries.
Britain expands blockade to all European ports and North Africa and Atlantic islands. The measure includes contraband controls for ships to or from these ports as Parliament debates foreign policy and responds to Japanese spy arrests in the Far East.
The Commodity Credit Corporation announced that loans secured by corn in warehouse storage will not be extended beyond the August 1 maturity. About 12 million bushels are stored in nine states. Producers may take possession by paying the loans plus interest and storage charges, with payments due by August 5.
A sidelight from Leslie Gould describes Wendell L. Willkie at a press conference where a known columnist with New Deal leanings took shots at him. A bystander recalled Willkie “put it over on him” and the columnist vowed to avoid him, lest he side with Willkie in the future.

Duane Dawson, 19, driver, had minor bruises and cuts. another injury listed as minor. The 1930 roadster owned by Charles Dawson sustained about 50 dollars in damage.
Sheriff Putnam reports no trace of Mrs Woods the fortune teller who spent last week in Washington and left Saturday with at least 100 dollars two rings and rented room paid for. Victims say she promised to return money and rings after charging fees for answers but left with companions a man and a girl leaving empty suitcases and unpaid rent.
Burlington Iowa July 39 UP Former Burlington police chief RK A Pat Murphy and Florence Robertson about 20 of Morning Sun were found shot to death in the latter room. A revolver lay in Murphy's hand. He is believed to have killed the woman and then shot himself. Two shots were fired from the revolver. Murphy left two notes addressed to Mr and Mrs Burt Vink and to K W Robertson of Morning Sun indicating intent to kill the woman and himself.
The local auto market shows a midsummer lull with only three new car registrations this week. Despite the slim week, year to date totals ahead of last year remain, with owners listed as Mrs. Lee C. Buchwalter of Riverside Chevrolet town sedan, Loren Robertson of Wellman Ford deluxe Tudor, and Roy Swartzendruber of Wellman Chevrolet town sedan.
Standard Oil plans a new service station leased by Dan Brindley ready for occupancy in six to eight weeks at the corner of East Washington street and South Second avenue. Lippert Construction Company of Oelwein began drilling the cement driveway on the northwest side of the present station.

Troop FP, 1131 Cavalry, held its final drill before heading to Camp Ripley Minnesota for a three week training with an army of up to 320000 men. The Washington unit of 65 soldiers and three officers will depart by Rock Island train around two in the morning Sunday and join Burlington and Iowa City contingents en route to Minneapolis.
The station will be torn down and replaced by a larger brick building with enameled steel face. It will feature a circular southwest entrance and floodlights, preserve gasoline lamps, and relocate the single car greasing rack inside the new facility. Public and private offices and rest rooms are planned. Mr Brindley says daily business continues during construction in a temporary office. Don Coates remains at the site.
Mt Pleasant Municipal Band directed by Chester Morgan will perform in Central Park on Wednesday at eight o'clock. The program includes marches, waltzes, overtures and popular selections with Paul Haney as vocal soloist. about 45 members. A second concert by the Washington Municipal Band, directed by Milo Sorden, is planned for August 15 in Mt Pleasant.
