Stal lander, a blind pianist from Burlington, has played by Braille since age seven. A graduate of the Vinton School for the Blind and the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in Oberlin Ohio, he continues to perform publicly.
A barn on Frank Nock’s farm near Emmetsburg burned down in an origin undetermined fire while the family worked in the field. The loss included two horses 16 tons of hay 400 bushels of oats and farm machinery. Nock had no insurance.
Ed Still well, 81, died at Spirit Lake after taking a dose of ammonia he mistook for mineral oil. The death is reported as an accidental poisoning with circumstances under investigation.
W T Cox objects to Farragut businessmen holding free Saturday night picture shows on a vacant lot he owns south of the post office. He had it plowed up Wednesday. Sponsors say free shows will continue on adjacent Cox lot on Saturdays.
Coralville merchants raised warning signs at east and west village limits after Marshal Joseph Breddstatter had several tourists arrested for speeding. The red signs read Speed trap indicating enforcement nearby.
The town of Mitchellville shut down the motion picture house and all public spaces as a precaution against a suspected epidemic of infantic paralysis. Children were given a new zinc plating immunization treatment.
Eva Jordan of McGrextor holds a landmark record for driving over a million miles without an accident. Last week at home she bumped her left foot on a rocking chair and now nurses a broken toe.
R. V. Black custodian at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, found four college towels with the note My mother wouldn't let me keep them. The towels had Teachers College printed on them and the sender remained anonymous despite a mail-in theft pattern being discussed.
Des Moines Atty General John H Mitchell undecided on whether to appeal a district court ruling ordering Comptroller B Murtagh to pay former attorney general Howard L OConnor 2166.84 in back wages. Observers expect an appeal and the four month window begins now. Murtagh holds a Polk County district court order signed by clerk Fred Barkelow demanding payment to OConnor.
A janitor found a fatigued grasshopper with a pale paper tag tied to its body. The tag bore the number 124 on one side and Nebraska grasshopper county on the other, though most of the text was torn. The insect revived slightly and continued on its path.
Washington county farmers are reminded this is the final chance to enter the county tall corn contest. Entries must reach the Journal office by 10 p.m. Saturday. Only stalks at least 13 feet 9 inches tall qualify for prizes, with three top prizes offered: first $5, second a Journal subscription, third six months of a subscription. Dale Smith’s 14 feet 7 inches remains the standing record at noon today. Three entries were added yesterday: Fred Waltman 13 feet 10 inches Harley Davidson 13 feet 9 inches M. R. Gardner 18 feet 8 1/2 inches.
State police described two men who robbed the First National Bank at Thornton Iowa of about $2000 late yesterday. The suspects wore overalls and dressed like farmers, one about 6 feet tall weighing 159 pounds and the other about 5 feet 8 inches tall weighing 170 pounds. A third man drove the getaway car.
About 150 homesteaders quit work on their own homes sewage system and community center in Tygert Valley as supervisors were dismissed and others not removed. The strike halts government payrolls paying rent on built homes creating unfinished houses and rent day at month’s start. Strikers oppose contractors building the community houses and may prevail on that point but oppose government personnel changes per Milo Perkins acting RA administrator.
Des Moines CIO organizers challenge a settlement of a strike at the American Plating Co. plant claiming AFL organizers used strike breaker tactics to force a settlement behind plant officials, alleging manipulation of the deal.
The Chesapeake steamer City of Baltimore caught fire prompting rapid rescue by fishing boats and other craft. Two men are confirmed dead J R Polikoff 70 of Aiken South Carolina and an unconfirmed Whealton 53 seaman of Quantico Virginia. Eight people were seriously injured and two remain missing. The fire’s origin is listed as a mystery.
The ice cream shop at 108 North Iowa Avenue passes to Emily Lorack of Iowa City from C. P. Eylis. Hazel Hore becomes local manager with Caroline Sampson assisting. The new owner promises a modern, up-to-date store for the community.
In Salamanca on July 30 rebels announce 1500 government troops killed and six loyalist attacks repulsed at Castrotoleren on the Biscay front. Rebel leaders say they push toward Aragon, now 40 miles from Teruel, with two villages captured.
Dr. F W Eastwood of the Presbyterian church announces the Westervelt missionary family from Batesburg DC will be in Washington on Sunday August 22. They have appeared in Washington before while touring northern states and will present an unusual program at the Presbyterian church during the morning service.
Mayor William Guilfoyle warns Council Bluffs will retaliate with a $5 per person occupation tax on Omaha motorists using streets if Omaha persists in charging a $2 wheel tax. The threat aims to deter cross-state street use and pressure Omaha officials.
In Peiping the emperor approved reinforcement troops for North China as Tokyo outlines sweeping plans to counter hostilities. In Tientsing a heavy Japanese bombardment lit many Chinese buildings ablaze tonight.
Japanese troops blasted Tientsin and forced Peiping toward submission while new artillery duels rocked Tientsin and Chinese resistance subsided. Peiping sat quiet as peace conferees met and foreigners returned home amid casualties. Japanese losses reported at 309 killed and 1200 Chinese dead in Tientsing. Chinese troops moved north from Nanking amid fears of further trouble.
Twenty four officers and sailors from a Spanish loyalist merchantman were missing after two unidentified submarines shelled the vessel and set it on fire near Nimes France. The captain and ten crew members reached shore.
Dearborn Michigan July 30 Henry Ford marked his 74th birthday with a visit to the River Rouge plant, then a tour of his 7,000 acre farm estate. He expressed optimism for the next quarter century, warning that progress requires measured reforms and education to resolve what he called a "present mess" in politics and labor.
Washington Concert band will stage the WLS Barn Frolic August 26 to 28 as a benefit event. Delbert Bailey announced the dates and a Prairie Farmer WLS Service telegram from Arthur MacMurrey confirmed the plan. The three evenings at Case Field will feature dialogues impersonations and local Washington County performances directed by a visiting director.

A young man from Norway named Vernon Ockenfels 20 died when his car struck a herd of cattle on a knoll top road near Vinton. Milford Ockenfels, his brother and passenger, reported the crash after the vehicle plunged into cattle, breaking the victim’s neck and causing instant death.
At least 27 people died and 25 were injured when a Paris express train derailed in a suburb due to a wrongly set switch.

Brinton, a former Townsend vice president, claims seventeen shares in Prosperity Publishing, alleging Townsend used company funds for personal use and sought to sell the publication to settle salary disputes.
Des Moines man Thomas A Jordan of Bloonfield Township in Polk County resigns as Justice of the Peace after arrest on intoxication and reckless driving charges. It is his second liquor offense.
Carl Jungbluth won the auction for the old Sanford livery barn to settle Mrs. Rebecca Sanford's estate. The price was 3050 dollars with several bidders. Jungbluth plans to tear down the weathered frame structure. The site near North Marion avenue and West Second street is prized, and the Sanford brick residence sale follows later today.
The Federal Social Security Board suspended all grants to Illinois for old age assistance due to inefficient administration by state authorities. Grants remain halted until Illinois complies with federal and state requirements for old age aid programs.
Des Moines reports that 15 state institutions farms operated under the board of control earned a profit of 169184 dollars in 1936, according to Comptroller C B Murtagh.
