Workers aim to raise 200000 for a proposed Washington Community Center with three kickoff nights at the YMCA. A 500000 gift is offered if the additional 200000 is raised. Special contacts have progress, and the three week campaign will start midweek with meetings for section leaders captains and workers.
Four weekend accidents left drivers losing control on county roads. Robert M. Masson of Winfield wrecked a car that overturned into a farm field near the Wayland Washington blacktop. no injuries to Masson or a passenger. Laverne Eicher of Route Two Washington escaped serious injuries after a late Saturday morning crash north of Masson, leaving two driveways and a ditch. Glen H. Schmidt of Winfield, with Minnesota plates, was hospitalized in Iowa City after a Sunday morning crash south of Rex Smith corner on highway 2. his wife was injured. Dennis Johnson of Mt Pleasant was hospitalized after leaving highway 218 and striking a telephone pole. his car and injuries were reported.
Medical biochemist Dr. Thomas H. Jukes of the University of California urges reviving DDT for essential disease control. He argues the 1972 ban was political, cites WHO malaria gains, and says DDT poses minimal human health risk while aiding crops and forestry, despite wildlife dangers and previous agency bans.
Governors Exon Ray and Anderson say the three day Midwest Governors Conference in Minneapolis should center on economic issues not Watergate. They urge limiting topics to what can be acted on and oppose reductions in federal revenue sharing to curb inflation.
Rep. Robert McClory, the second ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said he would vote to impeach President Nixon for misuse of constitutional powers. The panel reconvened to consider a second impeachment article alleging abuse of presidential powers and other offenses linked to Watergate.
Federal grand jury charges former Treasury secretary John B. Connally Jr. with two counts of accepting illegal payments, one count conspiracy to perjure and obstruct justice, and two false declarations to the grand jury. Texas lobbyist Jacobsen indicted on one count of making an illegal payment to a public official.
Iowa roads toll rose with twelve killed during the weekend in highway crashes across the state. A truck driver died on Interstate 80 near Grinnell. two Illinois residents, David Herscher and Patricia Hiles, died in a Muscatine County two car crash. Timothy Boger in Ida County. Richard Keto struck in Davenport. six year old Rickey Brugess died after bicycle accident in Cedar Rapids. three Des Moines area family members perished in a head on crash on Iowa 14 near Knoxville. A separate note states President Nixon will not resign even if impeached.
