A man posing as a radio quizmaster phoned Barbara Farrell in Van Nuys California and claimed she was the lucky winner of twice the amount in her house. She had 864 on hand and gave 64 cash before receiving a check for 8128 that bounced.
Soviet shutdowns delayed a truckload of 20 tons of Eisenhower food for six and a half hours at the Russian Zone checkpoint before it entered West Berlin. East Germans flocked to American, British and French sectors for scarce supplies as 180,000 sought aid in a day and 430,000 in three days. A baby airlift began with 4,490 pounds of flour arriving at Tempelhof.
Iowa Attorney General Leo A. Hoegh urged local leaders to form citizens committees to monitor law enforcement. He cited a Polk county case where a defendant avoided longer punishment via bench parole after a three year term was recommended. Beatch born near Riverside was a long time University hospital employee recently retired and a World War I veteran member of St Marys church the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and is survived by nieces nephews and cousins in Riverside and Hills communities.
Public workers with 30 years of service before 1947 may file claims for prior service under House File 140. The Iowa Employment Security Commission estimates about 1,100 people are eligible for monthly benefits ranging from 25 to 37.50 dollars. Claims are filed at the Iowa State Employment Service offices, with retirement inquiries in Washington.

Funeral services for Claude Schrock 28 of Frytown killed in an auto accident north of Kalona on Tuesday July 28 will be held Friday July 31 at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Sharon. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. He is survived by his parents Andrew and Lydia Mae Schrock and two brothers Orville and Olen both of Cedar Rapids and one sister Mrs Willis Deitweiler of Akron Pennsylvania.
Davenport police hunt a missing man reported slain. An informant says Tommy Navarro, 49, Davenport, was killed three weeks ago and dumped in a cornfield after an in car drinking party. Navarro had a deportation warrant.

The Iowa Highway Commission announced a trial to add three foot concrete strips on both sides of a five mile section of Highway 30 between Ames and Nevada. Chief engineer Edward Koch said success could lead to widening many miles of 18 foot pavement at about 18 000 dollars per mile versus 80 000 dollars per mile for standard widening.
Two trucks were damaged and milk spilled in a morning crash at the West Second street and North Marion avenue intersection. A Griffith & Hedberg dairy truck driven by Walter James Donaldson and a second vehicle operated by Hiram Robert Jacobs collided at 6 15 a m.
