Pan American pilot recounts near collision above Amsterdam

Pan Am Boeing 707 with 88 aboard narrowly avoided a Dutch Air Force plane over Amsterdam. Captain James Magenis said the two aircraft were about a second and a half apart as he climbed to pass over the other jet. Injury toll reached 31 passengers and two crew. Dutch and US investigations ongoing.

The United States pulls the last 1,800 Marines from Udorn Thailand ending a two month border guard mission against Laos based Communist incursions. The pullback reduces U S forces in the area to about 2,200 Army troops and 1,000 Air Force personnel.

Women of the Moose honored for cancer drive success

At a Women of the Moose meeting county cancer association chairman Jim Frier presented certificates of appreciation to the local group for leading the city drive. Total county collections reached 1873, up from 1376 last year, with Legion and VFW auxiliaries and Jaycees assisting by ward and district.

Norton Plumbing Among Contractors On Medical Clinic

Norton Plumbing of Washington served as the contractor for plumbing heating and air conditioning in the new medical clinic to be opened Monday by Dr. E J Vosika and Dr. G E Montgomery. Keith Norton’s share in the work for the clinic was omitted from Friday’s Evening Journal article. The general contractor was Earl Wood and Sons and a list of other workers appeared in the Friday story.

Louisa County Fair Opens Monday in Columbus Junction

The Louisa County Fair runs July 30 to August 4 in Columbus Junction. Harness racing is slated for Tuesday and Wednesday at 7 30 p.m. The Gene Holdren wild animal show appears Thursday afternoon and evening. A tractor pulling contest is set for Friday afternoon. Late model stock car races Friday at 7 30 p.m. Jalopy races are Saturday at 6 50 p.m. Other events include a cherry pie baking contest Thursday and Souse County artwork on display Friday.

Storms dumped heavy rainfall across Nebraska Iowa and Missouri raising flash flood danger. Areas around Omaha Council Bluffs and northwest Missouri reported rising streams while Texas towns faced evacuations and dam breaches. Tornadoes winds lashed Wyoming Nebraska and New York counties declared drought disaster areas seeking federal aid.

Two Women Die in One Car Crash Near Manchester

A one car crash on U S 20 near Manchester killed two 19 year old women, Mrs Melvin Nelson and Mrs Roger Gray, both of Delaware. The driver, Roland Eugene Nelson, 37, of Delaware, was in serious condition. The car left the road two miles east of Manchester, skidded 400 feet, vaulted 45 feet, struck a telephone pole, and knocked the pole another 20 feet before stopping.

Brighton Whoopee Days Set For August 3 4 5

The Brighton Community Chamber of Commerce will stage Whoopee Days and a rodeo from August 3 to 5. Events include a Friday stage show at 7 pm in the park with Vy Gosden of WMT as emcee, plus Vigor Tones Quartet and the Sobaski Twins, a square dance on the street, and Twin Tones at the high school gym. Saturday features a tractor pull at 1 pm and a 6 pm program by the Burlington American Legion drum and bugle corps, followed by the 7 pm rodeo at the rodeo grounds two blocks north of the Standard Service Station. The Billy Merritt Rodeo from Glidden will perform this year, with Gibby Gibson and his orchestra providing a 9 pm to 1 am dance in the high school gym. Sunday offers the final rodeo performance at 7 pm. Concessions, rides, and lunch stands will be set up August 3 and 4 at the rodeo grounds.

Washington County Fair Opens With Variety of Exhibits

County fair at Washington grounds opens Monday noon with 4H and FFA entries plus commercial exhibitors. Events include junior livestock judging at 3 30 p m rabbit and poultry judging at 4 p m and a talent show at 8 p m over four days. The fair runs through August 2 featuring a flower show, horse show and live stock displays with many concessions and picnic areas.

Mischief Becomes Federal Offense At Ainsworth Bins

County sheriff officials probe apparent malicious mischief at ASCS grain storage bins in Ainsworth where seals were broken and doors opened with no grain spilled. Federal offense arises from breaking seals and worsens if grain is lost. Bins sit north of the ball field by the high school. University of Wisconsin offers a doctorate in Buddhist studies.
