Five teenagers including two girls were to appear in court charged with stealing a car and turning a 1,200-pound Renault French-made vehicle upside down in an intersection. Police interrupted the stunt and had them right the car before escorting them to the station.
Washington county 4 H members in Goshen county Wyoming learn irrigation farming is demanding work. The group returns home Wednesday afternoon after a day on the field. They describe long mornings, moving 20 foot pipe every 40 feet with sprinklers, and adjusting water flow to keep the system working as the ditch is opened and rechecked.
Adlai Stevenson said he is emphatically opposed to Red China's admission to the United Nations until a clearer future for China appears. He spoke at a press conference with about 100 reporters, warning democracies may still face Communist challenges and noting no leader has shown evidence of changed imperial aims. He also commented on the Korean armistice and the unsettled prisoner exchange and Asia political settlement.
Complete Township PMA elections results show 483 ballots cast across 15 townships. Delegates elected will convene on Saturday August 1 to name a county PMA committee chairman vice chair man regular member and two alternates. Contingent details continue on page 7.
William Estep of Letts died early today at age 72. The body is at Stephens funeral home in Columbus Junction. Funeral services are set for 2:39 p.m. Thursday at the United Brethren Church in Letts, with burial in Letts.
Edward N. Gillmore, 41, of West Chester, died this morning in his car. He operated the B Hive cafe until two weeks ago and lived in West Chester for three years. Born October 2 1911 in New Boston Illinois, he married Lucille Stanton November 1 1946 at Keokuk. Survived by wife Cheryl and stepdaughter Martha. Funeral arrangements pending with Fairbanks Home for Funerals Muscatine.
Sarena Bradley 85 of Morning Sun died about 1 a.m. She was a former Columbus Junction resident. Funeral arrangements pending at Stephens Funeral Home Columbus Junction. Burial planned at Columbus City Cemetery with Rev. D H Brush presiding. Born December 10 1867 in Monmouth Illinois. Survived by daughter in law Mrs George Kern of Columbus City.
Farm Bureau women plan the Washington county educational exhibit "Color in the Home" for the state fair. A committee including Mrs John Skubal Mrs Herbert Campbell Mrs Raymond Whisler Mrs Wilbur Thompson and Mrs Keith Stewart coordinates daily booth coverage and outreach to other rural women attending the fair.

Washington secretary of state John Foster Dulles declared he would not rule out a veto on Red China's admission to the United Nations though he did not say if the veto would be used as a last resort. He indicated the United States view is that the issue should not be discussed at the Korean political conference.
Flames gutted a modern house on the Ira Miksch farm seven miles southwest of Washington. Lawrence Miksch spotted the blaze about 3:30 pm and neighbors aided with water. Most furnishings were saved. some bedroom furniture and canned goods were lost. No other buildings damaged. insurance will cover losses. rebuild planned likely next year.
A Washington municipal concert at Central Park on July 20, 1953 includes The Flatterer Overture, March songs, March by De Molay Commandery, and Sousa selections. Performers include L. John Winga Jr and March pieces by Mareh and Holcomb with works by Barnum and Bailey. The program features Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody, Lightening Fingers, and The Stars and Stripes Forever.
Kathleen Ann Crowe, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs Douglas Crowe, remained in serious condition after an automobile accident near Washington. She underwent surgery Monday at University Hospital in Iowa City. physicians described her condition as very critical.
Five persons perished as fire swept the Williams Lake resort hotel near Kingston New York. A woman jumped to her death and four died in the flaming building. Mrs Sophie Eckerlin 54 of Ozone Park Long Island identified. Police and firemen recovered charred remains of a man and a woman and child identified only as the Matthews family. The exact death toll unclear due to conditions.
Peiping Radio quoted by AP says Allied prisoners in Communist camps reacted with elation to the Korean armistice. American prisoners clapped yelled and tossed caps, one even climbed a basketball stand, while British inmates also showed rare excitement and greeted Chinese volunteers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lloyd Letts were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Jones Funeral Home with Dr. W. J. Growheim in charge. Pallbearers were Frank Kos Harold Johnson J. B. Letts Mac Wallace Fred Shrader Harold Miller. Burial was in Ainsworth Cemetery.
