Objects In Sky Are Reported In Many Iowa Communities

Rescue at Sea After Tropic Airlines Forced Down

32 people aboard Tropic Airlines survived a forced downing in the Mediterranean as Air Force and British allies conducted a perilous rescue. Captain Kendrick Reeves of Charleston landed his Grumman SA-16 on the sea to save as many as possible, with survivors later placed on life rafts. A British European Airways crew and naval warships raced toward the scene to assist.

Stevenson Heads Home as Truman Barkley Campaign Swing Planned

Wellman Man Dies. Minster David D Miller

David D Miller formerly a Mennonite minister at Lower Deer Creek church died at his Wellman home on July 26. Funeral set for July 30 at 2 pm in Lower Deer Creek church with burial there. Survivors include five daughters three sons twenty five grandchildren twenty one great grandchildren and a brother. Miller ordained in 1917 and preached at Lower Deer Creek for years.

Mrs. Charles S. Jirsa Dies at Kalona

Mrs. Charles S. Jirsa died at her Kalona home at 6 45 am after a long illness. Born Rose Walseh January 25 1884 in Chicago she married Charles Jirsa July 28 1918. Survived by husband two sons Harry Kalona and Charles Jr Wellman daughter Rosemary Fuller Kalona seven grandchildren four brothers one sister funeral arrangements by Peterseim and Son.

Jap Pilot Speaks At Sunday Service

Tamio Kato a native of Kochi Japan shared his World War II experiences as a Christian kamikaze pilot. He described being downed six times and saved by seconds, and said he will return to Japan to spread Christianity. Rev R W Thompson aided the union service with YWCA support and organizers were Mrs Cloyce Stewart and Mrs Maynard Brow.

Farouk Exile Arrives Off Capri Aboard Royal Yacht

Egypt's ex king Farouk is expected to arrive at Capri today aboard the yacht Mathrussa to begin exile. He travels with his son Ahmed Fuad the Crown Prince, six month old Ahmed Fuad II, and Narriman the Queen Mother, as Rome notes the ship may proceed to Genoa after Capri.

State Fire Marshal Orders Ten Changes at County Home Here

Washington county board receives 10 written orders from the state fire marshal detailing required improvements at the county home to meet fire code. The board has 60 days to implement changes including outward opening doors, extended and new fire escapes, repaired handrails, illuminated exit signs, outward hinged doors, enclosed stairs, plastered boiler room ceiling, a fusible link door between boiler room and hall, and repositioned hydrants for access.

Iowa Staters Attend Washington County Picnic

Iowa State Alumni officials led by J Armstrong and Red Barron visited Washington Sunday to attend the Sunset Park picnic with 12 Iowa State students and several prospective students. Barron presented a banner recognizing the county chapter for its vetive and constructive program, one of six awards nationwide. About seventy people attended.

Woman Falls Through Open Airliner Door

In a freak accident aboard a Pan American World Airways Stratocruiser over Southern Brazil a door opened and a 26 year old American born woman, Mrs Marie Westbrook Capellaro of Rome, Italy, was sucked from the pressurized cabin and fell 12000 feet to her death. Her husband Emilio Capellaro, 41, watched from his seat as she disappeared the rest of the 27 aboard unhurt. Authorities from the U S Civil Aeronautics Board seek to determine why the door opened during flight.

Sirens To Mark Canvass For Washington County Junior Fair

Sirens to sound at 5 30 p m Thursday July 6 to launch a city wide canvass for articles to be auctioned at the Washington County Junior Fair benefit. Promise Relief To Sweltering Iowans

Cooler weather was expected to spread across Iowa ending a sweltering heat wave. Forecaster said air from Minnesota would push temperatures down to 54 to 63 tonight with relief through Tuesday as highs reach 89 to 92. Warmer, very warm conditions were forecast for Wednesday and Thursday.

Illinois Man Charged Following Accident

Harold W. Ferns of East Mo line Lil was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and placed under a $350 bond by H. M. Put lustive of the peace. Ferns remained jailed pending bond. The arrest followed a highway accident at temple corner on highway 92 west of Washington. Ferns’ car rear ended Larry Anderson of West Chester after Anderson slowed for a turn. Damage to Ferns’ vehicle was extensive.

MiGs Attack British Planes Over Korea

Soviet made MiG-1S fighters struck from Manchuria more than 200 miles south into Korea, damaging three British two seat Fireflies from the carrier Ocean. One Firefly ditched in the Yellow Sea, another forced landed on an island, and the third returned to the carrier with injuries reported to a crewman.
