UN rejected Communist cease-fire demands at the talks in Korea and indicated no early accord. Negotiators clashed over where to fix the demarcation line along the 38th parallel as time runs short with skepticism about a rapid settlement.
Mrs. Wylie Anderson of Washington Iowa is named volunteer chairman for Washington county in this year’s Sister Elizabeth Kenny Foundation polio fund drive announced by Dr. Dwight Wirtz Des Moines orthopedist and state TV Kenny drive chair. The Kenny Foundation funds treatment including medical and therapy services at no charge for Iowa polio patients at Blank Memorial Hospital Des Moines and at the Elizabeth Kenny Institute Minneapolis. Funds support training of registered nurses and therapists to become Kenny Therapists and Miss Helen Marie Carlson enrolled in the new Kenny Therapist class at the Kenny Institute in June 20.
Davenport residents learned of a tragedy as 14 year old Donald Housh drowned in the Cedar River while two youths attempted a swim without life preservers. Four year old Donald Housh was reported as the victim with Henry Lum, a local trainee, rescued after Mrs Olson aided in a boat rescue.
Roy E. Ray a 21 year old Wyoming ranch hand will seal himself in an automobile in Spearfish South Dakota tomorrow and drive to visit four millionaires and two girls in a bid to beat Don Haynes endurance record of 13 months 18 days 6 hours 14 minutes. Haynes is directing the attempt and Ray says he is confident he can win.
Price control legislation moved through the Senate after a conference committee merged measures from both chambers. The bill would allow some price rollbacks to pre Korean levels and permit limited price increases, with allowances for rents, auto purchasing terms, and mobilization powers while denying broader presidential powers.

Judd W. bs land a farm youth from near Waterloo has been selected to represent the 4 H clubs of the United States at the World Assembly of Youth August 5 to 16 at Cornell University Ithaca New York The World Assembly of Youth is a Western backed organization opposing communist youth groups and will meet on the Cornell campus.
Foster of John Morrell & Co says the Topeka packinghouse will not reopen after flood damage. The firm, with HQ in Ottumwa and a Sioux Falls plant, cites financial limits for repairs and will provide severance pay to laid off union and non union workers. 1200 employees with a 34 million payroll affected.
Washington county district plans a training school for adult Boy Scout leaders next week. Morne Will leads the course under Scout executive Martin Tranter in the Town River Valley Youth Center. Evening sessions Monday through Friday at 3 o clock will cover Scouting routines and youth leadership with help from Clifford Morrison Rev T C Volke and Harold Hazelett.
A fifth straight month of lower farm prices is reported, with agriculture officials cautious on promises. The decline is gradual, requiring sharper drops in specific items to affect consumer prices, as the July report notes a 2.5 percent drop. Fruits, cotton, oils fell while eggs and butter fat rose.

The storm, tied to the day’s heat, caused downed trees, garden damage, and heavy rain in parts of Haskins Ainsworth Crawfordsville and Havre with two inches of rain in fifty minutes near Haskins.
Robert Wheeler, 17, son of Conesville residents, was sentenced to two years at Elders training school after a hearing in Wapello juvenile court. He and two Columbus Junction youths were involved in gasoline theft and the burning of two Cameron and Joyce construction dump trucks three miles east of Morning Sun. Wheeler suffered severe burns and received treatment at University Hospital Iowa City.
Games scheduled at Green Tiere Friday night were postponed because of yesterday's rain.
The outlook shows east portions partly cloudy this afternoon with 60 to 68 degrees tonight and Sunday. Highs Sunday reach 85 to 90 with light northwest winds, then cooler Monday night. Clouds may bring scattered thundershowers Sunday night and Monday, then partly cloudy Tuesday with continued warm, near midweek.
Washington Airport club members met Friday evening in Sunset Park pavilion. Daryl Burham praised runways and safety, noting the airport can handle most commercial aircraft and no obstructions. Prospects for a new airport manager were discussed, with Wayne Marston seeking candidates for contact. Next meeting set for Friday August 3 at 7 o'clock.
