Russell Melvin Covert of Dixon Illinois was killed when the airplane he piloted crashed into a farm field twelve miles north of Davenport. State patrol said Covert appeared to be searching for a landing field and maps indicate he was flying from Cedar Rapids toward Dixon.

A Burlington railroad freight train derailed near Cromwell Iowa late yesterday spilling four cars and a caboose. The roadbed was torn up for more than 300 yards and both mainline tracks were blocked for hours until Creston crews cleared the rails with no injuries reported.

Mrs George Clapper 74 of 320 West Washington street died Saturday night at Washington county hospital after about a month of illness. Funeral services 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sherman funeral home with Rev T B White officiating. Born August 9 1872 on a farm southwest of Washington she lived in the county all her life. She was married January 1 1900 to George Clapper and was active in the Presbyterian church and Fortnightly club. Survivors include her husband one sister Irene Darbyshire and many nieces and nephews.

Drowned 12 Year Old Wyona Stout Poorly Tragedy at Palisades
Funeral services are set for Wyona Nedewa Stout 12 daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Stout who drowned yesterday afternoon at the Palisades between Cedar Rapids and Mt Vernon. Patty Ann King 13 also drowned and Hazel Seeman 14 was rescued by Wyona’s father. Five children were on a floating log when they slipped into the river. Artificial respiration failed. Services Wednesday at 10:30 AM West Chester Methodist Church with Rev Vernon Pike. Burial in Engov e cemetery. Surveillance by Sherman’s Lastral home. Wyona born Sept 23 1984 finished sixth grade at West Chester school. She lived on a farm near West Chester and attended the Methodist church. Survivors include her parents and four brothers Larry Jerry Daryl and Dale and both maternal and paternal grandparents.
