Weather reports 101 degree heat shatters Iowa record

Des Moines and other Iowa cities endured record heat with highs around 101 degrees. Weather observer Charles Reed predicted showers and cooler air tonight or tomorrow, but may not fully relieve crops in drought conditions. Limited rainfall and a low pressure system from Canada contributed to only minor precipitation.

Perry Faces Trial for Killing a Wife

Eagle River Wisconsin July 28 George W E Jiggs Perry stood trial on charges of bigamy and murder of Cora Belle Hackett Perry on the Lac du Flambeau Indian reservation in July 1930. Washington resident Mrs. P. F. Whisler has been nominated for the third annual Champion Farm Woman of Iowa award. Liquor Cases Before Court In Oskaloosa Session

Governor Dan W. Turner authorized action to battle grasshoppers in Iowa. Officials proposed using unused corn borer funds and possible $20,000 from retrenchment funds to finance extermination. He is to preach each Sabbath during August at the Covenanter church and will tour Hopkinson Morning Sun and other Iowa towns. Three men Theodore Esben Harry Esben and Otto Sehreck were extradited from Ames Iowa to Nebraska for the July 2 Webster County Savings Bank robbery at Red Cloud. Nebraska authorities identified them by photos and witnesses and planned to return them to Red Cloud.

Round Up of Alleged Road Robbing Gang in Newport

In Newport Kentucky a running gun fight with police led to the capture and wounding of Doris Baldwin 21 daughter of Arthur Baldwin St. Louis steamboat owner and the arrest of two men and two women accused of multiple road robberies. Otto Ray Buchanan 24 was captured after his car crashed and fled on foot. He accused Doris of betraying him through jealousy of her ties to Margaret Cameron Newport. Automobiles Collide Near Davis Farm. One Killed

Davis of Washington was killed in a rural crash five miles west of town while awaiting threshing. Six others were injured, four admitted to hospital. initial reports say injuries are not likely to be serious. Names of other involved and injured not yet available at press time.

Treasures from Kremlin Vault Unearthed by Workmen Today

In Moscow July 28, workmen repairing the Kremlin uncovered a secret vault with undisclosed treasures from the czar era. Included is a solid gold tea service for 28, weighing 80 pounds. The items join the state bank collection of Romanoff gold and jewels valued at about 250 million dollars, once shown to Shaw and Lady Astor and American reporters. Shaw touched the 5,000-diamond Romanoff crown valued at 52 million dollars. Mrs Ray McConnell and her Davenport family visit Washington this week.
